A Portrait of a Lady (Classic Literature with Classical Music)

A Portrait of a Lady (Classic Literature with Classical Music)
Customer Review: An insult to James
I’m a big fan of Naxos audio books and of Henry James so it was with great anticipation I took out the first disk of this 4-disk box set and slipped it into my cd player. I was very quickly disappointed. I have been unable to listen to the whole book, in fact I find it intolerable to listen to any part of it for more than fifteen or twenty minutes without stopping it with a cry of near desperation.

The problem is Elizabeth McGovern’s appallingly leaden narration. She reads James’ text like she was reading the telephone directory, no feeling, subtlety or much characterisation. She reads like the speaking clock. Banal, mechanical and soporific. One wonders how the publishers passed such an inept performance.

One to avoid - unless you need help getting to sleep.

Afternoon Tea Serenade: Recipes from Famous Tea Rooms, Classical Chamber Music (Sharon O’Connor’s Menus & Music)

Afternoon Tea Serenade: Recipes from Famous Tea Rooms, Classical Chamber Music (Sharon O’Connor’s Menus & Music)
Customer Review: A necessary addition to one’s Tea book library!
This is the perfect book for Tea novices and afficianados alike! To have actual recipes from the cream of the crop Tea Rooms in the world is quite nice. The recipes are clear and very simple to follow and the results are fantastic! Additionally, having the history of the Tea Rooms to share with my guests is a real plus and the beautiful music from the companion CD creates such a relaxing atmosphere. I have been in the Tea business for several years, I thought I had seen it all, this set has truly been an asset in my Tea Room and has left me thoroughly impressed!

Customer Review: great book for any tea lover’s library
If you love having high tea or afternoon tea parties or going to them, then this book is for you. I am always looking for tea books and such, but more importantly, recipes and how/what to combine together for such activities. Friends and I had high tea at the Ritz-Carlton, Boston (one of the contributors in the book) and we had a terrific time. What we ate were recipes right from the book. And they were yummie. Remember tea parties of your own don’t have to be so formal. Enjoy all the recipes and mix and match! wishing you happy tea party memories :)

Classical Music
Customer Review: The perfect introduction to classical music
This book is a gem. It is perfect for someone who knows little about classical music and doesn’t know where to start, and it is also a must-have for any lover of classical music. The book is packed with detail and very well-written. The author makes the subject fun and colourful by including anecdotes and other personal information about the composers and by ranking them and comparing them in a funny way that really works well. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Customer Review: This book changed my life!
I bought this book back in 1993 because I always loved classical music but knew very little about it. I cannot say enough good things about Goulding’s work. The book is funny and well-written, but more importantly well-thought-out. It is is extremely useful and highly, highly recommended for someone who wants to learn about classical music and build a collection. (FYI: As for the previous comment about Rachmoninoff, he is actually in the book, although not listed as a Top 50 in terms of importance and greatness. Goulding apparently agonized over this decision and includes a very funny section about it.)

The Penguin Companion to Classical Music

The Penguin Companion to Classical Music
Customer Review: The only one volume musical reference you’ll ever need
The first composer entry in this companion is Carl Friedrich Abel and the last, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. That gives you some idea of the sheer comprehensiveness of the book. Pretty much every composer you’re ever likely to encounter is included here. Add to this all the musical terms, definitions, instruments, styles; plus may performers - both past and present -, major librettists (e.g Hoffmanstahl). I could go on, but you get the picture.
One feature of the original Penguin Dictionary of Music that is retained in this much expanded Companion, is separate entries for major and titled compositions (e.g The Hebrides Overture). This makes it a great reference book for the concert-goer and listener. A new feature, which is very much to be welcomed, is the referencing of web site addresses and important books related to individual entries. (There is, for instance, a web site dedicated to Joachim Raff. Or you can go to Steve Reich.com or Peter Maxwell Davies’ website MaxOpus).
One feature of this book is the pithy and (often witty) style with which it gives a few key, interesting details that give insight into character, life or musicianship of a composer or performer. For instance, Alfred Brendel: “Austrian pianist, whose performances are the working of a lively, quizzical mind”. Ambrose Thomas, “He held Wagner, Debussy, Faure and instrumental music in general all in him ample low esteem”. This all helps make the book really enjoyable to read - look up one entry and you may find yourself browsing for hours! It also must be said that if offers a very balanced and fair critical assessment.
Accessible, enjoyable and comprehensive. I highly reccommend this book. It is the only one-volume general musical reference work you will ever need.
