A Portrait of a Lady (Classic Literature with Classical Music)
Customer Review: An insult to James
I’m a big fan of Naxos audio books and of Henry James so it was with great anticipation I took out the first disk of this 4-disk box set and slipped it into my cd player. I was very quickly disappointed. I have been unable to listen to the whole book, in fact I find it intolerable to listen to any part of it for more than fifteen or twenty minutes without stopping it with a cry of near desperation.
The problem is Elizabeth McGovern’s appallingly leaden narration. She reads James’ text like she was reading the telephone directory, no feeling, subtlety or much characterisation. She reads like the speaking clock. Banal, mechanical and soporific. One wonders how the publishers passed such an inept performance.
One to avoid - unless you need help getting to sleep.
