If you want an authoratative and well researched accoutnof where Country music came from, look no further. This IS the book. It traces the Country music from its orgins to the present day. It is academic in terms of its content but very readable and always interesting. It is a real page turner, hard to put down and a very useful reference book to dip into from time to time. This is the BEST book of its type on country music. Highly recommended.

This is the place to start any indepth consideration of country and western music. In fact Dr. Malone’s survey and Nick Tosche’s COUNTRY THE BIGGEST MUSIC IN AMERICA are my two favorite introductory volumes. Each book is radically different from one another with Dr. Malone’s history by far the more authoritative and serious consideration while the Tosche’s book operates more as stream of consciousness fan’s notes.
