Roots Rock Riot

Roots Rock Riot
Customer Review: Everything will be allright
The long awaited second album by Skindred is finally here. I was worried that after touring, with Babylon for over three years, the Dred boys would be able to pull off another classic. The fact that Jeff Rose and Ginge left not long after the Babylon was released; record company politics;could have meant a dramatic problem re song writing. The last time I saw them live they did little new material to give us an idea of what the new material was like.

Having said all that, the melting pot of metal, punk and Jamaican danchall is all here. Benji gives us his lilting one second, harsh Ragga/ metal vocals the next. The guitars bass and drums interspersed with the trusty sampler gives us a wonderfully fresh groove.Changing tempos and mood dynamics flow effortlessly.

The song are all extremly catchy while having an inherent power that makes them all the more infectious. The mix of dance and metal/rock is gauranteed to have you jumping about even if your on a bus listening to i-pod!

The Title track Roots rock is a belter followed by Trouble which will hook you in with it’s sing along chorus. Ratrace, allright, are all good songs , in fact I don’t think there is one bad song on this album. The more I listen to it the more I get in to it. The doubts that I had wtih song writing over the line up change have been completely dispelled. This fusion of styles is contemporary, exciting and I can’t think of a “rock ” band at the moment that come close. Horns are on Rude boy for life as well as live strings. The production is clear without losing any of the power. I can’t wait to see them live, though they look like they are touring in the U.S. till the end of the year, hopfully next year.

Customer Review: 10 seconds left for you to decide…
whether or not to buy this..?

In general the album is heavier than Babylon, with more lean towards jungle (cause ah riot), and for anyone who doesn’t know Skindred, but is a fan of metal, this album is well worth a try.

Skindred fans, this is also good, as the band have resisted the temptation to commercialise, as many bands do, and have indeed ‘uncommercialised’.

Customer Review: mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm smooth
smooth…smooth….if you like smooth stick to silence its smoother than smooth and better than this slime

Customer Review: I like it a lot, but…
it’s not jazz.

I love every single song on these CDs and yes, as someone else pointed out, they are songs you’d recognise from films and adverts.

If you’re a hardcore out and out jazz fan then this CD isn’t really for you, but if you like easy listening jazzesque sounds then go for it, this CD is gorgeous.

Gergiev’s complete Nutcracker is tops, 17 Jun 2007
By Yi-Peng (Singapore)

Of all the recordings by Gergiev I own, I feel more than ready to consider this among his more pleasing efforts. Gergiev brings a new perspective to this well-worn Tchaiokvsy chestnut, such that it is given a more robust performance than typically given during the myriad of Christmas ballet productions. From the lightness of the overture to the weighty grandeur of the finale, Gergiev ably fleshes out the contrasting moods in the score. Adopting generally brisk speeds, he adopts continuity yet still churns out a magical performance for one to revel in the many felicities of the score. Now, these brisk seeds are not as rushed as many people might think, but they really make the ballet lilt and trip along without sounding clunky like most other recordings of the work. The dramatic mood is suitably conveyed in the transformation scene, and the many famous dances in the Suite are given crisp, robust readings. The two Pas de deux scenes and the various Waltzes convey a stately grandeur, especially during the Waltz of the Flowers. Yet there is also a delicacy in the Sugarplum Fairy’s Dance, the Arabian Dance and the Dance of the Reed Pipes. Throughout Gergiev elicits a robust sound from the Kirov Orchestra, with a fine balance between the sections, except perhaps for the wobbly Russian brass. The Philips recording is superb, one of their best recent recordings, sumptuous yet clean and well-detailed. An added bonus is the fact that this Nutcracker only takes up one CD rather than two. Highly highly recommended, especially since this fresh and robust rendition seems destined to put other Nutcrackers to shame. Don’t let the bad reviews discourage you – this is a crackling, energetic Nutcracker that really lends a new lease of life to this overplayed ballet.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Jesus: Parental Advisory

Rock ‘n’ Roll Jesus: Parental Advisory
Customer Review: Totally different, totally awesome
Have only been a recent convert to the Kid Rock scene recently, despite hearing the ‘Devil Without A Cause’ track many years ago.

Looking at the progression from ‘Devil’, through ‘Cocky’ to this, his style appears to be changing, and a certain mellowing with age does seem to be apparent; apart from ‘So Hott’ and ‘Sugar’, the use of his more colourful language is reducing and the style is going more country and less rap/rock.

Not that this is a bad thing, by any stretch. Most of these tracks are instantly addictive with their catchy tunes (the deep-south swing of ‘New Orleans’ being a notable example), hard-hitting and often humorous lyrics (Lowlife being full of some great lines, as is the intro talk to ‘Half your age’) and their funky style; this album sounds like Kid had some fun in the studio rather than being focused on trying to get some issues off his chest.

Customer Review: THE BEST YET
BELIEVE IT ..THE KID ROCK IS BACK WITH HIS BEST OFFERING YET. ALL I CAN ADVISE IS IF YOU EVER LIKED THE KID THEN TAKE A CHANCE .. I AM SURE YOU WILL AGREE- NO DUFFERS

The Best of One of the Greatest Tenors, 7 Sep 2007
By Mart Classic Review (UK) – See all my reviews

Released in 1997 this 2 CD compilation contains 40 of Pavarotti’s most popular performances. The word ’special’ should really be included before the front cover’s mention of guest stars for the voices, albeit only one track each, of Cecilia Bartoli, Andrea Bocelli and the late Frank Sinatra. Their contributions make this a special album.

The album opens with ‘Nessun Dorma’, the piece which launched Pavarotti into worldwide popularity when it was used for the opening ceremony of the FIFA 1990 Football World Cup. Pavarotti’s subsequent performance of this piece with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras (during The Three Tenors Tour) on the eve of the World Cup final probably widened the appreciation of the general public to opera music more than any other performer of his generation.

Cecilia Bartoli and Andrea Bocelli accompany Pavarotti on opera music by composers Mascagni and Morante, while Frank Sinatra helps teach Pavarotti the right way to sing `My Way’.

This is a fine example of Pavarotti’s skill at crossing different musical genres while promoting, and succeeding in popularising, operatic music into general culture.

A great CD for Pavarotti fans and opera lovers.

Pavarotti’s finest, 17 Mar 2004
By “thestupidman” – See all my reviews

HE’S BACK! This is a truly spiffing album! I was completely blown away! Pavarotti continues to be the most complete and absolutely superb opera singer around. As I was listening to it, my neigbours heard, and, even though they are of the rap kind, they came round to my house and listened, and they sheepishly admitted that they had been astounded by the marvelous music! Every single little bit is fantastic- congratulations Pavarotti! 10/10 WONDERFUL

Customer Review: Pop music sucks! Pop art rocks!
Featuring canonic artists from the Andy Warhol era (Blondie, The Velvet Underground and David Bowie to name a few), this CD is not only great to listen to, but is also educational. Want to know just who those bands are that the music press name check when discussing The Strokes et al? Look no further my friend – The Stooges? Check. Television? Check. We all wish we’d lived in New York during such a creative and frankly rocking period of history, but with this CD we can have a damn good pretend.
Customer Review: does the period justice`
the cd starts off with the classic (and highly influentual) velvets typical sixties track waiting for the man. then it carries on into the spooky voiced nico goes through some high quality songs as i wanna be your boyfriend by the ramones and finishing on lou reed and john cale. brilliant. this cd has got the great tracks of the warhol movement. any indie kids must have!!

Words and Music: A History of Pop in the Shape of a City Customer Review: The music is the star, even if he probably is the best rock writer of all time
Possibly the greatest rock writer of all time, possibly the natural heir to Wittgenstein, possibly the greatest book ever written about Pop music.

Through a car ride with an image of Kylie and a collection of lists Paul Morley, former NME journalist and cultural impresario, charts the progress and connections found in popular music over the last four decades. Paying particular attention to the leftfield and the near unknown, Morley not only directs us to the music we either love or should love, he also shows us how to best appreciate this musical menagerie and goes further than most in depicting the importance and purpose of this music in the listeners life.

Morley is an engrossing and eloquent writer gripping the reader on an unconventional journey through the city of music with an engaging array of lists, footnotes, and details of travels with a Kylie avatar.
