Abide with Me - 50 Favourite Hymns
Customer Review: Inspiring Collection
I have often listened to church music thinking to myself is it all manifested in the same place and released under different titles? However this selection ‘hits the spot’ with some great renditions of worshipful music and if you like to listen to part singing then cd 1 is excellent. There also some lovely descants some of which i had not heard before, an inspiring selection. Excellent.

Customer Review: Excellent!
Excellent quality, and a good selection of hymns to choose from. Was very impressed, and would recommend to anyone looking for a CD (or two!) of British hymns.

The Jazz Singer: Original Soundtrack

The Jazz Singer: Original Soundtrack
It may now be hard to believe but there once was a time when Neil Diamond was considered not only big enough to open a movie but to get Sir Laurence Olivier to co-star in said movie. While the movie itself was less than a rousing success, the soundtrack was a smash–though, contrary to the title, it does not find the Elvis of soft-rock taking up jazz. Playing the part of a young Jewish cantor who follows his heart to play, well, a Neil Diamond-esque blend of R&B and rock, Diamond finds excuses to throw in some soulful singles (”Love on the Rocks” and “Hello Again”), a fluffy, uptempo slice of Stephen Foster-Americana (”On the Robert E Lee”) and a topical song (”America”); padding out the soundtrack are the film-specific Jewish hymns “Adon Olam” and “Kol Nidre”. Eternally consigned to a limbo between being remembered for his better moments (Live at the Greek, writing some of the Monkees’ biggest hits) and for the tawdry ones (”Turn on Your Heartlight”, inspired by E.T.), The Jazz Singer remains one of Diamond’s best albums. –Randy Silver

Customer Review: A little Jazz goes a long way
How can put into words how this soundtrack album has affected me. It introduced me to the fabulous Neil Diamond after watching the flim of the same name. Agreed it has some rather silly tracks like ” On the Robert E Lee”which although works in the film does not have the same feel good factor on audio.Kol Nidre is a very powerful track & no doubt very emotional to sing as well.
Buy it & play it loud “Hey Louise” is great I wish they had left the “Get on with it Fool” bit during the mouth organ at the beginning of the track ” Summer Love” on the album.

I have watched the film countless times & heard the soundtrack just as much. One never gets board of either,

Customer Review: Listen to Neil Diamond’s soundtrack and skip the film
The decision to make a modern version of Al Jolson’s “Jazz Singer” in 1980is one of the more dubious ideas to come out of Hollywood. Putting singerNeil Diamond in the Jolson role opposite Laurence Olivier as his cantorfather and Lucy Arnaz as the woman he loves had only one sure upside inthat Diamond also did the music for the film. If your choice is betweenwatching the film or listening to the soundtrack, then listen to thesoundtrack.
Diamond was inspired by the immigrant element of the story to honor thenational melting pot in the opening song “America,” along with one of hisbetter ballads from that part of his career “Hello Again.” The songs alsoplay to Diamond’s strength in that several of them would be done “live” inthe context of the film, and anyone who has listened to “Hot August Night”or any other concert album by Diamond knows he is a lot better live thanhe is in the studio. In retrospect that is clearly the point in Diamond’scareer where the hard rock and gospel influences went away and he began asoft rock/pop artist where songs like “Love on the Rocks” and “Summerlove”became the norm. His early songs are arguably his best, but it was notuntil his 1976 album “Beautiful Noise” that Diamond ever had an album goplatinum.
To his credit Diamond does come up with songs that meet the narrativeneeds of the film, not that this is a reason to watch the movie, so do notaccuse me of advocating you do that. There is no reason for you to seethat “You Baby” is part of an awkward homage, for lack of a better word,to Jolson in black face. Also worked into the mix are some traditionalJewish songs, “Adon Olom” and “Kol Nidre/My Name Is Yussel,” and Diamondmakes an earnest attempt to do them right. The resulting mix might beuneven, but there are enough solid songs here to make this an aboveaverage Neil Diamond album.

Rock Swings

Rock Swings
Customer Review: An amazing idea
As a fan of both the rock and jazz scenes, I couldn’t help but buy this as soon as I heard the track “Smells like teen spirit” on Radio 2 the other day…

This is one of the best cover interpretations I have heard in a long time. Sure, the style does not suit ALL of the songs (and I am talking one or two) but the rest sound immaculate, almost as if they were written for swing. Personally, I could not want any more (apart from maybe a rock swings 2!)

Customer Review: a really unique album

This is not an album I play often, I admit, but it’s worth owning if only for the fun of startling and cheering up friends. Not all of the songs are effective in swing style, but watching someone’s face trying to place familiar lyrics in Anka context is hilarious.

Soundboy Rock

Soundboy Rock
Seven albums in, and if Groove Armada show no sign of handing in their chill-out crowns, Soundboy Rock suggests London’s popular downbeat alchemists are more eager than ever to branch out. As the title suggests, this is an album that plays down Groove Armada’s cocktail-supping Balearic side in favour of a more robust sound inspired by hip-hop, house and dub reggae. Immediate highlights are “Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control)”, which could almost be a long-lost Madonna single of the ’80s, but for the fact it features ex-Sugarbabe Mutya Buena on vocals; and the title track, a simmering reggae skank that sees Groove Armada joined by their MC, MAD, and Hard-Fi’s Richard Archer on melodica. It’s a surprisingly guest heavy record - also on board is Alan Donohue of The Rakes, soul queen Angie Stone, Tony Allen of The Good, The Bad, And The Queen, and Simon Lord of Simian Mobile Disco. Being old hands now, however, Groove Armada are wise not to let this celebrity cavalcade distract them from the matter at hand - that is, making bouncy, unpretentious dance music that balances a crate-digger’s taste with maximum mainstream appeal. –Louis Pattison

Customer Review: Mixed bag of tracks
After “Vertigo” and, even more so, the excellent “Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)”, I’ve got to admit this is something of a letdown. Though this is by no means bad (in the traditional sense), it’s a very mixed bag of tracks most of which are much too radio-friendly for my taste and more often than not sound a bit shallow to these ears. No real standouts, unfortunately. PS: “Song 4 Mutya” doesn’t have anything to do with Madonna, Human League or A Flock of Seagulls (oh my God!), for that matter. The riff and groove are culled from “Let’s Be Adult” by Arto Lindsay & Ambitious Lovers from their excellent 1984 album “Envy”.

Customer Review: Progression Is A Wonderful Thing!
I’ve been a sporadic lover of the “Armada” tending to gravitate toward the mighty Faithless and Groove Armada’s poppier twin Basement Jaxx, (my own opinion natch..), I have to admit my interest was fired up again because of two things, watching the live gig on DVD (in a very smokey Amsterdam coffee shop, go figure), plus finding out that the equally smokey Mutya Buena was to collaborate. Well,I have to report Groove Armada are back with an outing of gargantuan proportions, the Yello tinged “Hasta Luego” opener to the Bambataa beats of “Save Our Soul”, Ibiza tinged grooves of “The Things We Could Share” and the AWESOME “Feel The Same”, (available on the *bonus tracks release)vie with the laid back feel of title track “Soundboy Rock” , (surely a nod to let the fans know that the ‘Groove is still a toking ensemble?). Theres also Orb-like atmospherics “Whats Your Version/s”, including great dance structures “Get Down”, “Lightsonic”, “All The Girls Say” and “Drop That Thing “. Which brings me to “Song For Mutya/Out Of Control” which seems to draw mainly on the sounds of the 80’s, Human League/A. F. O. S. (ask your Dad..),Depeche Mode and maybe even a wee bit Big Audio Dynamite? All in a noughties style this will grow to be THE summer 2007 sing along hook, fantastic! Add in a handful of Groove Armada ecleticity and your there. (*Get the bonus tracks versh ‘k?)

Pop Idol - the Idols: Xmas Factor
The Xmas Factor is a collection featuring all 12 finalists from 2003’s Pop Idol series, each getting a solo bite at the Christmas-classic cherry. Critics of the series may think it easy to dismiss the soon-to-be-forgottens but the truth is each of the finalists deliver a good performance and the group collaborations “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” and “On This Day” are good versions of great songs. There’s very little in it, but highlights include Sam’s charmingly warm “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” and Susanne’s wonderfully kooky “Santa Baby”. Another song worth noting for a completely different reason is “I Believe” in which Brian sounds eerily like the silver-tongued cavalier of Christmas tunes, Sir Cliff Richard.

So all in all, The Xmas Factor is a really good collection of songs for the festive season–you might not want to listen to it in July but it’d be nice to think it might get dragged from the back of the CD rack for later Christmases. –Georgina Collins

Customer Review: Guess who wants to cash in from other peoples songs?
What a disaster! This album is just plain poor. All of the songs which have been swiped from original artists are not fitting and provide terror to the ears. John Lennon would turn in his grave if he heard Happy Xmas(the idols version)and Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree sounds both drawn out, boring and is just not up to the standards of “Pop Idols”. “All I want for Christmas” and “Santa Claus is comming to Town” are just bad efforts. The originals of these songs are joyful, relaxing and festive. I am sure many people would disagree with my judgement, but can anyone seriously listen to this cd and hear anything but a money making scam. There was nothing wrong with the original tracks so why try and improve them.
Customer Review: Id rather buy the tweenies album
At first I thought the CD was broken, I checked all the conections and I was wrong. The CD was checked many times and then I saw them o the TV. No the CD wasn’t broken though it was just terrible. So terrible infact that I threw it out of my window onto my flaming pile of cds and other articles related made-for-tv musics. I brought this CD thinking it would bring Christmas cheer to my household after our pet Snake had died. But it just added to the saddness. I cannot beleive that people can get away with this. It is murdering the music industry. Report this to trading standards, these people must be stopped. Dont buy this record for anyone except possibly your mother in-law.

Pop Party 5 Customer Review: Poop Party!

Customer Review: Very good

Children’s Christmas Carols and Songs [Pop Up Sleeve]

Magical Music of Disney (Kunzel, Cinicinnati Pops Orchestra)
List Price: ?12.99

Customer Review: Worth it…
I recently watched all my favourite Disney films over again…revisiting my not-so-long-ago childhood…and got completely hooked on the tunes. I would go to sleep with an instrumental from Pocahontas in my head and wake up with the Little Mermaid! I needed some closure so I looked for a c.d, especially with some of the instrumentals. Admittedly this c.d isn’t the initial cast recording, which you can tell by the sound clips, and so I was expecting that. Most of the songs are done with a full chorus - songs you wouldn’t think would work with that format, ‘Prince Ali’ for example sounds amazing. It has some of the most beautiful scores, including some at the beginning and end of other songs. The Little Mermaid Introduction and Happy Ending especially are outstanding - the choir is perfect and fitting in the beautiful Beauty and the Beast instrumentals at the front of songs like Be Our Guest is clever and really works. But some of the solo numbers don’t work as well, ‘A Whole New World’ doesn’t sound that great with the two lead singers while ‘Part of your World’ sounds great with just the girl. What can I say? Unless you really loved the Disney music to start off with, you wouldn’t be buying this. If you have a real liking for sweeping orchestral numbers and harmonies then this is the c.d for you. I really love it. The music is beautiful, these people can really sing and I can finally get some closure…
Customer Review: Not the original Recordings
I was disappointed to find that the songs were not the original recordings, the only reason for the two stars is because the production was done well, apart from that not a lot to sing about!

Pop Art: Underground Sounds from the Warhol Era

Customer Review: Pop music sucks! Pop art rocks!
Featuring canonic artists from the Andy Warhol era (Blondie, The Velvet Underground and David Bowie to name a few), this CD is not only great to listen to, but is also educational. Want to know just who those bands are that the music press name check when discussing The Strokes et al? Look no further my friend - The Stooges? Check. Television? Check. We all wish we’d lived in New York during such a creative and frankly rocking period of history, but with this CD we can have a damn good pretend.
Customer Review: does the period justice`
the cd starts off with the classic (and highly influentual) velvets typical sixties track waiting for the man. then it carries on into the spooky voiced nico goes through some high quality songs as i wanna be your boyfriend by the ramones and finishing on lou reed and john cale. brilliant. this cd has got the great tracks of the warhol movement. any indie kids must have!!

Customer Review: Billie Holidays finest moment
This is a fabulous collection. However one track stands out above the rest and that is Billie Holidays performance of ‘Fine & Mellow’.

This is one the most famous filmed performances in Jazz history. Even though its very near the end of her career, her performance is emotionally moving and musically perfect. She is helped by 8 of the finest soloists you’ll ever hear. Two musicians on Fine & Mellow stand out for differing reasons. Firstly Lester Young, again near the end of his career, plays a typically beautifully melodic solo. Secondly Roy Eldridge who on his second chorus goes for the high notes in classic jam session style.

There are many other performances that make this DVD worth buying:

Monk (with Count Basie watching) playing Blue Monk.

Miles with John Coltrane.

You cannot go wrong with this disc, its worth the money for the Billie Holiday track alone. With another 95mins of top quality Jazz from some of the greatest performers ever, its an essential purchase.

Customer Review: Superb snapshot
Absolutely agree with the other reviewer. Superb music brilliantly played, plus an emotional performance by Billie Holiday. What really struck me was that I could watch these artistes, especially Miles Davies and his band, in their prime.

Let There Be Rock

Let There Be Rock
This is rock as its most unapologetic: raw, aggressive, basic, full-on metal with more than a touch of schoolboy sexism. 1980’s Robert “Mutt” Lange-produced Back In Black might’ve been where the Australian band hit it big, but one has to return to the gritty, guttural tones of original singer Bon Scott to appreciate AC/DC at their fiercest. In particular, the garage, almost punk-style production on “Problem Child”, the title track and denim classic “Whole Lotta Rosie” showcased the Young brothers’ no-nonsense riffing technique at its hardest and most ass-kicking. Metal was built on albums like this: Black Sabbath’s debut, Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy–no-nonsense screaming coupled with often childish lyrics matched to the most primal of riffs. An unbeatable combination. –Everett True

Customer Review: A corker
A raw, bone-dry production is matched emphatically with grinding guitars and a rock-solid rhythm section on this classic album. The songs on this album have real character; not the sing-along anthems of their 80’s and 90’s material, but pure blues-based hard rock with riffs, powerful vocals, amusing lyrics, and awesome leads from Angus Young. The character of his note selection and vibrato is equalled only by Bon Scott’s rasping, leering vocals - but there’s always a sense of melody behind the noise. Malcplm Young’s rhythm guitar relentless chimes out powerchords, whilst bass and drums complete the backbone of a very special band in fine form. Footnote: Angus Young’s amp started smoking and partially caught fire during the solo to the title track. He nearly stopped when he saw his brother, George, gesticulating from behind the studio screen. Fortunately, George was in fact encouraging Ang to keep going, which he did.

Customer Review: Let there be rock
All the early AC/DC albums are great - High Voltage, Let there be rock, Powerage, Highway to Hell, are brilliant. After Bon Scott sadly departed, and Phil Rudd left the band, AC/DC changed. All the very basic raw energy of their early stuff left with them. My favourite tracks on Let there be Rock are: Bad boy boogie, Problem child, Hell ain’t a bad place to be. My favourite tracks off other early albums are: Rock and roll damnation, and High Voltage. The live album ‘If you want blood you got it’ is superb for a live album, and has all their early hits on it.
