Rock Me Baby

Rock Me Baby
Customer Review: Fantastic value for money
For any Cassidy fan slowly replacing LPs with CDs this is a must. What great value. Certainly not the best of Cassidy but if you lived through the era it will be a CD you’ve just got to have. I hadn’t heard it for so many years. When I played it all the memories of the time came flooding back - still get shivers up my spine when I hear ‘Go Now’- his voice is excellent and the cover of it brilliant. ‘How can I be sure’ is as good, if not better than the Dusty Springfield version and all in all I am so pleased so be able to add this to my CD collection.

Customer Review: TEENYBOP FASCINATION
I confess – as a kid I loved David Cassidy in the days before I discovered Leonard Cohen. Of course I also thought The Partridge Family were a hot band. I think that of these songs, Rock Me Baby, Go Now and How Can I Be Sure were all hits. But I much prefer Soft As A Summer Shower, a truly beautiful atmospheric love song with great imagery. David had some catchy songs but over a whole album’s length, his music is not that engaging. I think The Partridge Family albums are a bit better as their catchy songs had more of a pop sensibility than David’s often cumbersome ballads. I’m giving the album 3 stars for old time’s sake.

Customer Review: Why are you even thinking about this ?
I mean really ? Discotheque aside, there is no reason to listen to this album, ever. If you’re a U2 fan then why aren’t you listening to Joshua Tree, Actung baby, Zooropa or Unforgetable fire, all waaaay better than this. If you’ve never really heard of U2 then go and buy one the U2 albums I just mentioned. It’s not a rubbish album by any means, but if you’re going to listen to this band go for the good stuff, there’s nothing on this album they haven’t done a billion times better elsewhere.
Customer Review: stray effort
U2 I feel tried to become a part of the times with this album, and in my opinion, it didn’t suit them. If you can imagine a middle aged man going through a midlife crisis, dancing badly in a discotheque and trying to be cool. Thats my anagram for this album. This album is sometimes hit, but mostly miss. They are better playing in the rock genre. And when they do and are at their best, they set the bar for any other act out there. U2 have never been conventionl but I feel ‘Pop’ was a step too far.

Customer Review: Essential roots rock reggae!
In my humble opinion, the vinyl version of this album was and is one of the great reggae classics of all time. This CD purports to be the orginal album plus extra tracks - in fact, this seems to have different versions of the tracks that were on the original album (the one I have, anyway!). However, having said that, the different versions (not all of them are different, confusingly…) are excellent and virtually all the extra tracks are rocking too! This CD is an essential buy for anyone who loves reggae or even has just a passing interest in it. ‘Nuff respect!!!!

Apart from the non-release of Smile, the biggest lament of hardcore Beach Boys fans is that Bruce Johnston aside, none of the non-Brian Wilson solo albums are available on CD. But now, for fans of late drummer Dennis Wilson, there’s reason to celebrate as his only-released solo album gets the reissue it deserves. Widely acknowledged as the finest Beach Boys solo effort, it’s now presented with clarity, allowing the full sonic palette–the punch of opening “River Song” for example–to be heard in its intended glory. Wilson’s raspy vocal may have been past its prime, but it’s still affecting and ably supported by the sumptuous production values he gave the album. With high quality tracks such as the funky “Dreamer” and the poignant “Farewell My Friend”, this will appeal to anyone with even a passing interest in The Beach Boys, as well as a delight for hardcore fans as the unreleased tracks (from the unfinished follow-up Bambu), easily match the original’s quality.

While the disappointing absence of earlier singles (”Lady” or “Sound of Free”) prevents this from being a definitive career anthology, this is as essential a Beach Boys artefact as Pet Sounds or Sunflower/Surf’s Up. –Thom Allott

Customer Review: A forgotten classic
I’d heard a lot about this album but only came by a copy earlier this year for the first time. I’d been expecting dissapointment - after all, the catalogue of great drummer’s albums is a pretty slim volume - and 30 years on maybe the moment would have passed. But this one is a revelation - a rarity that delivers. Dennis had real talent as a writer withstanding comparison way up there with his more revered brother Brian. Not as a pale immitation but as a strong independent voice. The album is obviously the work of a Beach Boy but not a Beach Boys album by any means. Pacific Ocean Blue has a range and depth that is quite unexpected without the pomposity and grandeur of some 70s contemporaries. It manages to side step the sunny Califoria cliches too - more ‘Hotel Califorina’ than ‘California Girls’ in sentiment. It’s still very much of its time yet it retains its self-respect. It’s a mature peice with a heart, and often heart-achingly beautiful, particularly when Dennis’s occasionally mournful voice is to the fore. It is clearly conceived as a connected group of songs with an underpinning sensation of warmth and empathy. It’s a whole album first, rather than a set of separate songs - so if one of the tracks crops up on ipod shuffle I just have to hear the rest. What a shame that it has lain forgotten for so long or that Dennis never built on such a solid foundation. The Beach Boys catalogue seems so relentlessly re-packaged and re-marketed it seems odd that this album has avoided the ‘de-luxe re-master with bonus tracks’ treatment. It’s not over egging it to call this a forgotten classic which is surely long overdue for a decent reissue.
Customer Review: there’s very little to say,if you have a soul and a functioning eardrum-buy it
there are a growing number of ppl who think that with this album and (the never officialy released)bamboo Dennis proved himself a genuine rival to brian as the main talent of the beach boys.enough said

Simply the Best Classical Anthems

Simply the Best Classical Anthems
Customer Review: Snippets but no volume
A selection of snippets, a taste test, a combi meal of classical anthems. Ideal for the first time classical virgin but not the full bodied classical feast that was expected. It’s a shame to expect to be listening to a comprehensive selection of the worlds finest classical music to find that the start, end and most of the rest has been cut out of some wonderful pieces of music to leave only the bit that anyone who doesn’t nip out for a cup of tea as soon as the adverts come on television would recognise. OK, so how did I expect them to get 38 full versions of classical pieces of music onto a double CD?, well, my mistake.

Customer Review: **An Exquisite Album**
Simply The Best Classical Anthems

Simply The Best Classical Anthems is a compilation album of ‘36 of the most powerful Anthems on Earth’. But, it is also said to be something else. It is said to be a gateway. A gateway to another world. A world where our imagination can run free without being shackled down by any borders or boundaries or rules or limits. A world that we have all seen or perhaps more accurately have all heard of but for many of us a world that we have never dared to enter. Never dared to enter because of fear. The fear of being ostracised and shunned by our community.

THE MYTH
Classical Music!’, I can hear some of you cry. ‘That isn’t another world. That’s just music for the upperclass, the high-brow, and the pompous.’ Surprisingly, I too felt this way for a long time until I accepted the invitation made to me by Simply The Best Classical Anthems. I always felt that Classical Music was nice to listen to as background music for a Levis ad or a Car ad but I would consider people strange if they chose to hear it on its own. However, after having listened to this album I realised how wrong I was in my assumptions.

THE TRUTH
Music as with all forms of amusement helps to take you away from where you are now. It helps to relax you when you are stressed with anger; it helps to give you strength when you are vulnerable; it helps to keep your spirits up when you have faced tragedy or loss. It helps. And, for me the type of music that best conjures up the most passionate emotions (love, hate, courage and anger) at our most testing times is Classical Music.
How? I don’t know.
Why? I don’t know.
I can only promise you that in my experience it does.

THE CHEST
The album, in visual terms, is very difficult to overlook amongst the plethora of records that may surround it. This is because the album has a very distinct purple sleeve cover. Not any kind of purple mind you but the Cadbury’s kind of purple. The kind of purple that carries with it an invitation. An invitation that if accepted promises you a treasure inside.
And since, I have always enjoyed the treasure within the purple Cadbury’s Dairy Milk wrapper, I asked myself why would an album carrying the same invitation promise to be anything different? Thus, I parted with my tuppence worth and went back home to open this purple chest of promised treasures.

THE PROMISED TREASURE
As you may have guessed, the contents of the album are somewhat different to the contents of a Cadbury’s bar. When I opened the album, I was presented with two compact discs. At first glance, there did not seem to be anything special about them. They were just your average, everyday, run of the mill compact discs. To tell you the truth, I was a bit disappointed because I suppose I had hoped for something more.
However, looks can be deceptive. (Afterall, a Cadbury’s Dairy Milk does not seem very appetising until you taste it!) And, also come November each year, I am always bemused and surprised at how the shabby contents of a cardboard box can both light up the sky and light up the faces of the neighbourhood. Thus, I pushed aside my assumptions and I ignited the discs (not literally of course, I just pressed the play button on the CD player). And, I let the fireworks begin.

THE KEY
From the very beginning, you will feel like you have unlocked the doorway to something special. And, after a full two hours of listening to both discs, you will feel like you have been taken out of this world and transported to another. Welcome to the world of Classical Music.

GUIDANCE
In the beginning, continue to listen to both discs in one go (i.e. one after the other). After a while, you will know which tracks you enjoy listening to the most. For those tracks you enjoyed the most make a promise to yourself that you will listen to the whole of the piece from which that track came from.
Good Luck on your quest if you choose to accept it.
Ride amongst the Valkyries, listen to the Flight of the Bumblebees, and use The Planets to keep you on the path.

I am not a good reviewer because as with all of my reviews I refuse to comment too much about what is inside the product but rather more about what effect the product has had on me. (Me, me, me. Vain & Egotistic, I know, so my friends and family keep telling me). But, I just want to cause a raucous about the product, enough not to spoil but enough of a raucous to let you experience it for yourself.

So my final words are:
Simply The Best Classical Anthems is an invitation. An invitation to the world of classical music. A world where you can begin a never-ending quest of curiosity. A curiosity that will always be rewarded with fulfilment.

Do you accept such an invitation?

Hope you found this review helpful.

Customer Review: Yo Ho Ho!
This deserves a wordier review! This great Liverpool trio seem to be lumped in with yer basic NME-friendly shoutalong indie but theres a lot more to them than that. There’s all sorts of stuff going on here. Really great songwriting, some great Pirate/Sea shanty references, some off-kilter time signatures, great lyrics, choruses you can sing along to, great harmony vocals and lots of whoops and hollers! Think a supercharged Field Music, XTC, or maybe The Battles if they decided to write pop songs. To cap it all, theres a sort of Afro-pop element there as well that Peelie would have loved. Many moments of sheer, unhinged delight in a field of its own.
Customer Review: Excellent Album!!!

Customer Review: I WAS 19 WHEN I BOUGHT THIS ALBUM
YES BACK IN ‘71 I BOUGHT THIS DOUBLE VINYL ALBUM, AND READING THE NEW SLEEVE NOTES IN THE CD, WAS ONE OF THE FEW WHO DID. I WAS MIGHTILY IMPRESSED WITH THE ALBUM, BUT COULDN’T HELP THINKING THAT I WAS LISTENING TO CHICAGO’S FIRST TWO ALBUMS, HOWEVER THIS IS NO DETREMENT TO HEAVEN BECAUSE HEARING THE REMASTERED VERSION NOW IT STILL IS A DAMN GOOD SET MADE BY A VERY PROFESSIONAL GROUP OF PEOPLE AND I DID NOT REALISE THAT THEY DISBANDED SOON AFTER. SURELY AT LEAST SOME OF THEM MUST STILL BE IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS.

Customer Review: If your sound card has a line-in connector you might not need this device
I used the ADS Instant music with my old computer and, with the help of the earlier reviews, managed to record a couple of tapes via the headphone socket(using a phono to jack convertor ) on my hi-fi amplifier. However, with my new higher spec computer, when I tried to transfer a cassette tape, there was a hiss which made the recording unlistenable. I realised from other reviews there was nothing I could do about this hiss so looked for other ways of transferring tapes/lps. I then discovered that I could buy a cable much more cheaply which again plugged in to my headphone socket on the hi-fi and then into the line-in connector on my sound card which has its own bundled software for recording. Anyone want a surplus to requirements hardly-used ADS instant music device!
Customer Review: Does Nothing Your PC Can’t Do Already
This gadget offers to convert your LP collection into digital format on your PC. As someone with lots of LPs, this sounds like just the thing. Unfortunately, it has two major flaws - the software and the hardware. The software provided is Nero SoundTrax from Nero 6. This is an old, discontinued version (the current version is 8) that has known compatibility issues with Windows Vista. Google `Windows Explorer not responding Nero’ to see some of the hideous things that old Nero software can cause, and install at your peril. An update is available via a weblink provided but Vista still warns that it has a problem. And why are they bundling such an old version when a Vista compatible one is available? No software is provided for Mac users. When I contacted InstantMusic support (about a different problem) the first thing they suggested was using Audacity - a free piece of software for Windows and Mac. It seems that they have little faith in the supplied software either. So this leaves us with the hardware. What you have is a box that accepts the output from your hifi and connects it to a USB port on your PC. However, most PCs, quite a few laptops and almost all Macs have line-in connections, usually via a mini stereo jackplug. You can buy an RCA (what comes out of your hifi) to mini-jack converter cable for a couple of pounds and connect it straight to your PC or Mac. I tried it both ways - with the InstantMusic box and directly to my line-in imput, on both Mac and PC - and there was no obvious difference between the two. I used Creative software that came with the soundcard on my PC and Garageband on the Mac. I also used the free Audacity. Garageband is by far the nicest to use but they all do the job. So at the end of the day, you are paying nearly ?30 for software that isn’t compatible with Vista or Apple computers and a box that can be replaced by a cheap converter cable. Its actually worse than that. Other reviewers have complained about a loud static noise on recordings. I also got this (only on my Mac laptop, not my PC). However, it didn’t happen using the direct line-in connection. So you’re actually better off not having this box. Spend the money on a sound card with a line-in connection if you don’t have one. Furthermore, their support isn’t very helpful. They did respond to my email about the static problem. However, they seem to be non-English language based and I was seemingly unable to explain to them what the problem was and what I had tried to rectify it. They just kept telling me to try Audacity. In the end, they stopped responding to my emails. Regrettably, I have to conclude that this product is worse than useless. The alternative - a simple cable to connect your line-in port - is available on this website, at the time of writing, for 1p. You choose!

Like the Tin Man’s heart, the true test of a real classic is how much it is loved by others. The enduring charms of The Wizard of Oz have easily weathered the vicissitudes of changing fashions making the film one of the world’s best-loved, most-quoted and frequently imitated movies.

It’s now as ubiquitous an American pop-cultural icon as McDonald’s, making judging the movie purely on its own merits an almost impossible task. Judy Garland’s tragic later life, for example, makes her na?ve and utterly beguiling Dorothy seem all the more poignant in retrospect. But this at least is clear: much of this movie’s success depends on the winning appeal of Garland’s “Everygirl” figure, who creates the vital identification and empathy necessary to carry the audience with her into the land of Oz. We always care deeply about Dorothy, her quest for home and the strength of her friendship with her companions. Garland’s assured dancing and singing routines with her ideally cast Broadway comedy co-stars Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr and Jack Haley are still endlessly delightful, of course, and the songs and score (by Arlen, Harburg and Stothart) are as good as anything in the Hollywood musical canon. It is Garland’s deeply felt rendition of “Over the Rainbow” that is both the film’s emotional core and the reason why adults as much as children the world over still respond so strongly to this movie. So long as people long for home and the love of their friends and family, the nostalgic appeal of Oz will never fade.

On the DVD: another splendid digital restoration from the MGM vaults keeps this wonderful classic as vivid and alive as it was back in 1939, if not more so. The 1.33:1 picture is clear and defined, bursting with the vibrant colours of Oz (you can even see the wires holding up the Lion’s tail). Even more remarkably, because the original microphone tapes have been preserved the soundtrack has been remastered in 5.1 stereo, thereby accentuating the lush tones of the MGM orchestra and Garland’s famous singing.

The disc is also chock full of extras, including outtakes, audio sequences, composer Harold Arlen’s backstage movies, extracts from earlier silent Oz films, clips from the Academy Awards and interviews with the stars among many other fascinating nuggets. The new 50-minute documentary hosted by Angela Lansbury, and irritatingly narrated in the present tense, is oddly the weakest part, with too little hard information and too much padding about how everyone loves the movie. The only gripe is Warners’ trademark cardboard slipcase, which is awkward and easily damaged. But this is still an essential disc for the young at heart everywhere. –Mark Walker

Customer Review: Magical movie!
This movie is so iconic it is deeply ingrained in our culture. As a little girl, and as an adult too, we all want a magical pair of “Dorothy” shoes. The movie’s message is very simple; there’s no place like home. The magical world of Oz is in technicolor whereas the scenes in Kansas are in black and white. This helps to show how enticing Oz is. The characters are pretty damn good, they don’t make em like that anymore. All of the characters go through a personal journey in the film; to get home, to become brave, to get a heart. The plot is as delightful as the characters and the setting, with a dash of humour added in; a must see for young and old, even my quite sensitive 6yr old daughter can handle the scarier bits. The replay value is immeasurable, I have seen the movie so many times and will watch it many times more. The music is enchanting too! Overall I think this movie is a must see. I would rate it 9/10
Customer Review: Quite simply a classic
This is one of the all time best films. I can’t wait for my babies to be big enough to watch this as I am sure they will get as much fun out of it as I did when I was little. Why write this comment? To remind people that just because it is an old film does not mean that it is not suitable for children of today. Buy it for them and you and you will remember why you loved it so much! Simply amazing.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Jukebox [3CD Box set]
Customer Review: Fantastic Value
Three CDs, 25 songs on each CD, really cheap price… what more could you want?
This box set is a great addition to any CD collection. If you wanted to add a rock n roll genre to your collection, wanted a decent compilation for your car or needed a collection of rock and roll classics for a party, then you cant go wrong with this set.
Although if you’re looking to burn the CDs (naughty naughty!!) it might be worth noting that these CDs have Copy Control Technology. And there is a note on the back of the box saying that playback problems maybe encountered on some equipment. I havent had any problems myself… and at such a cheap price its probably worth the risk!
