Jazz In Paris - Stephane Grappelli Qt, Vol 1

Jazz In Paris - Stephane Grappelli Qt, Vol 1
Stephane Grappelli loved a challenge and there was none that he loved more than an encounter with a famous American musician. In this case the encounter was with two since Oscar Peterson was supported by Kenny Clarke at the drums, as well as Orsted Pedersen on bass. This rhythm section unsurprisingly set up a formidable swing but Grappelli floats serenely above them, showing that he too had the technique to handle any situation. This 1973 date was only the second occasion on which Grappelli and Peterson had played together and the first had been 16 years earlier. However, they clearly had no problem in establishing common ground and agreeing on an unhackneyed selection of material. The delectable “Flamingo” and “My One and Only Love” are played as slow duets, prefiguring Grappelli’s entire session of duets with Earl Hines a year later. Elsewhere the complete rhythm section is in action and they gave Grappelli a satisfaction which he put into words after the session was over, comparing their support with the quality always provided for him by Django Reinhardt many years before. –Graham Colomb?

Masters of Jazz

Masters of Jazz
Customer Review: Master of the altosaxophone
It should come as no surprise that you could compile a first-class cd of Johnny Hodges’ work outside of Duke’s band (well, two tracks from 1943 and `49 have Hodges as the main soloist with the Ellington band). However, this one is not only first-class, it is overwhelmingly beautiful, no more, no less. Four tracks (approximately 1954) have him very much on-form with an anonymously-sounding Ohio trio, and six others (1961 and ‘64) with small cohorts of Ellingtonians in a well-known repertoire, while a seven-minute version of Mellotone from 1954 is also interesting by featuring a down-to-earth John Coltrane solo, more than a year before he joined Miles Davis.

The cd’s `piece de resistance’, however, are the six 1960-titles that reunite Hodges with Ben Webster. The two horns go beautifully together in some catchy Hodges-tunes, kicked along by Gus Johnson in a frisky mood. Actually, this session was also released on a long deleted Johnny Hodges Mosaic set, which had the songs titled correctly.

Alto playing doesn’t come more beautiful than this.

Mojo Rocksteady Beat: Soul Jazz Presents

Mojo Rocksteady Beat: Soul Jazz Presents
Customer Review: A vast improvement over volume I but still with reservations…….
This is basically Volume 2 of Soul Jazz’s “Jamaica Soul Shake” compilation concentrating on the seminal Studio One house-band, ‘The Sound Dimension’ that was extant in the ‘67-’70 time period. Volume 1 was a distinctly underwhelming experience due to too few really classic tracks (”Baby Face”, “Full Up”, “Bitter Blood”) being diluted by too many middling to poor tracks, particularly in the second half where things really took a turn for the worse. Volume 2 I am glad to say is a massive improvement with numerous all-time classics (”Rockfort Rock”, “Real Rock”, “Heavy Rock”, “Park View”, “Drum Song”, etc) being interspersed with strong “filler” tracks which whilst not all deathless classics (though there ARE a few; eg. “Ironside”, “Mojo Rocksteady”) are strong. I’d say there are only one or two genuinely subpar tracks on this CD as opposed to ten or so on Volume 1 (yes, it was that bad!). Well that’s the upside, what about the downside? Well it has to be said that the REAL top drawer tracks on this CD have almost all been issued by Soul Jazz before which means that almost a quarter of this CD has been regurgitated from earlier releases. This is pretty disappointing considering the depth of the Studio One catalogue and gives a misleading impression of having to ’scrape the barrel’ or ‘pad out’ themed compilations of this type. I simply think that Soul Jazz’s sequence of themed Studio One compilations might have run their course, at least for a time since fatigue has definitely set in, and in future they should concentrate on single artist compilations for the numerous classic acts that have been under-anthologised in their compilations in favour of sometimes “rare for rarity’s sake” artists. Just a few of the classic acts that have barely had a look-in in Soul Jazz’s Studio One compilations include “The Gladiators”, “The Wailing Souls”, “Horace Andy”, “Larry Marshall” and to a lesser extent the great “Alton Ellis” all of which could easily fill out a 70 minute CD with top-notch material without breaking a sweat.

More from the almost forgotten Hodges/Wild Bill sessions for Verve and RCA in the 1960’s. Great music. Buy and enjoy.

Complete Jazz at Massey Hall

Complete Jazz at Massey Hall
Customer Review: Amazing
This is one of the classic jazz recordings. The quintet consisted of Charlie Parker on sax, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Charles Mingus on bass, Bud Powell on piano and Max Roach on drums. The lead-up to the concert itself was apparently a bit of a shambles, but the music is pretty amazing.

Customer Review: Complete Jazz at Massey Hall
A ‘must have’ CD. This (in)famous concert has 5 of the greatest jazz muscians of the day live in concert! No rehersal, Parker on a plastic alto - it’s still brilliant! If it not in your jazz collection, I have to ask why!!

A Hi Tech Jazz Compilation

A Hi Tech Jazz Compilation
Customer Review: Quality beats
Do yourself a favour and buy this immediately. This is pretty much all the classic Galaxy 2 Galaxy trax from UR - including Astral Apache which was for me an old fave from the 90s. A good range of styles on offer but all fused with melody and funk. If I could give this more than 5 I would!

The Only Jazz Album You’ll Ever Need

The Only Jazz Album You’ll Ever Need
Customer Review: disaster strikes
for years now I’ve been spending the old hard-earned on Mingus this and Miles that, with me Blue Note and ECM….crikey noone told me some clever individual had done all the work for me and boiled it all down to this - the only jazz album I will ever need. What a load of money and time I’ve wasted…if only the ‘only album you’ll ever need’ would get on and cover all the other types of music or better still stop messing about and make the one and only ultimate only double album of music of any description you’ll ever need and we can buy it and forget the whole thing..hurry up and sort it out someone.

Customer Review: A Good Starter
As can be seen by the track listing , there is a great selection of both classics and modern numbers . Glenn Miller rubs shoulders with Sting , but without any lack in the feel or continuity of this double album set . There are familiar numbers from television , instrumentals , and solo artists' interpretations of jazz numbers from over the years . The CDs are split into Disc 1 - “Swingin'” , and Disc 2 - “Chillin'” , which gives you some idea of the mood of each . All in all a great introduction to jazz .
