The Rough Guide to Country Music (100 Essential CDs)

The Rough Guide to Country Music (100 Essential CDs)
Customer Review: Big country, little book
Just to clarify matters - although presented on Amazon as an Audiobook, this is, in fact, a small book (not much bigger than a cigarette packet), not a CD. For its size, it’s an excellent little package, offering neatly penned reviews of 100 ‘essential’ CD’s from the country music tradition.
Kurt Wolff offers something of a potted history of country, here - from ‘The Essential Roy Acuff’ to Steve Earle’s “Guitar Town” and “Lucinda Williams”, he provides intelligent, highly informative reviews of a hundred CD’s by the leading figures in the genre. Of course, it’s a big country, and a history which stems from the 1920’s and goes through a whole range of incarnations. Not every record here will be to everyone’s taste … and everyone will have at least twenty artists and CD’s they feel should have been included.
Each of the reviews, however, provides a brief history of the individual artist and his or her place in the country hall of fame. It’s an exciting little number if you’re just getting into country and want to listen to a broad range of artists. This is a useful starter for country fans planning on building a collection, and an excellent stimulus to try something new.
Customer Review: The Rough Guide to Country Music
This is a truimph of a book reviewing the work of the earliest singers such as the Carter family through greats such as Tubb, Tom T Hall and George Strait to the modern day artists such as MCGRaw and many lesser known names.
For each artist it reviews the best of the albums with succinct descriptions that are right on the mark. Reading it gives you more and more ideas of albums you would like to try
Artists are cateogorised into sections and each sections begins with the history of that era of country music
A great book
