Seventies rock has had its share of bad press, conjuring up images of beer-bellies ambitiously squeezed into worn denim and gold medallions glinting from a sea of chest hair. Boasting none of the surreal glitz that characterised glam or disco, the meat-and-two-veg, foot-to-the-floor machismo of bands like Free, Bachman–Turner Overdrive and Thin Lizzy hasn’t weathered particularly well in these more “sophisticated” times. Which is a shame, because as feel-good music goes, Top Of The Pops 2: 70s Rock is an absolute belter. “All Right Now”, “Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet”, “Silver Machine”, “Smoke on the Water”–they might not win any prizes for subtlety, but they are guaranteed to cause frantic air guitar wizardry whenever one comes on the pub jukebox. Full marks, too, for the inclusion of “Paranoid” by the mighty Black Sabbath. No Seventies rock collection worth it’s Old Spice would be complete without Ozzy recounting how he finished with his woman, and this doesn’t disappoint. Wind-in-your-hair driving music at its best, even if you don’t actually have a car. Just stick this album in your personal stereo, and even that bus ride to work won’t seem quite so boring any more. –Billie Swift

remember the 70’s when aging rock stars sang about school and Thin Lizzy looked dangerous? This album captures the mood and variety….with the atmospheric “she’s not there” by Santana to Rainbows “since you’ve been gone”….something for everyone

Its hard to believe that Brazil’s leading political-activist singer is now 60, and harder still when you listen to The Definitive Gilberto Gil. This 18-track anthology spans three decades, but the only way you’d know is through the gentle introduction of studio technology. Together with his friend Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil ushered in the late-60s tropicalismo style, which blended a variety of regional genres to form a musical challenge to Brazil’s then-oppressive regime. Their lyrics were dense and allusive, their tempi were exhilaratingly fast. Gil’s own songs are perfectly attuned to his light, high timbre; his favourite accompaniment is a delicately-strummed acoustic guitar, which often descends to a confidential whisper. If he uses a backing group, he does so very discreetly; a light touch of Latin percussion is quite sufficient to allow him to float his songs into the ether. This exhilarating album begins with his early song about his home patch in Salvador “Toda Menina Baiana”, and moves on through a gamut of national styles and moods. It’s a real shame there are no proper sleeve notes (and no lyrics), but in every other sense this is a smashing tribute to his intensely personal art, and to the sunny-side-up view he presents of his native land. –Michael Church
