Customer Review: The Reid brothers new band is a family affair, and very fine it is too
Sister Vanilla is the name of the new band formed by Jesus And Mary Chain brothers Jim and William Reid so named after their sister Linda who has joined the band to provide sweetly cooed vocals. The vanilla bit relates to her pale complexion while the sister bit …well you can work that out for yourself. If it sounds very much like a Jesus And Mary Chain album that’s because ostensibly it is, with long time JAMC member on board as well . Linda provided vocals for the track “Mo Tucker” on the last JAMC album “Munki” and that obviously germinated the idea for “Little Pop Rock”, though they have taken their time about it , the album taking two years to be released in the U.K.( It’s been available in Japan for a while) The brothers step up to the microphone for “Jamcolas” and the serenely melodic “Delicat” while on the scuzzed up rock chords Of “Can’t Stop The Rock” they share vocal duties. Linda also duets with Stephen Pastel on last track “The Two Of Us” a great song that sounds uncannily like “Roadrunner” for the first few crashing chords. Incidentally Stephen Pastel mastered the album ,along with Steve Rooke, and I feel there is definitely a Pastel influence in the playing on this album , as it’s occasionally looser and sloppier than the usual JAMC fare. There are a number of ragged guitar solos that sound amazingly like the Pastels though the wah wah on “Down ” reminds me of “Loop”. But there is a disparate range of styles displayed with the piano led opener “Pastel Blue”, the slide guitar on the glorious “Slacker” and the almost tender atmospherics of” Angel”. There are a couple of rather dull moments -”Kissaround” is a cumbersome ballad while “TOTP” is the most redolent of their former sound -along with “K To Be Lost”- hitting a pleasing linear groove but the guitar noodling over the top quickly becomes tiresome. Not to worry though because the most commercial song on here - “What Goes Around”- is fantastic , one of the finest things the brothers have ever produced . A perambulating riff with Linda’s honey vocals at odds with the “I piss all day and I piss all night” lyrics. “Down” is another terrific song, the nearest thing to pure pop I have heard the Reid brothers involved with and one that sort of explains the albums title as it’s pop and rock …only more than a little, All things considered Sister Vanilla are very much to my taste and I reckon any fans of the JAMC will find much to lick their lips about here.

Customer Review: Bohemian Soundalike
This album is worth buying for one reason alone, a quite stunning cover of Queens ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. The group spent weeks doing overdubs but the ‘Pops’ creators spent allegedly a day and the result is very much like the classic original. It’s quite uncanny. OK they were copying rather than creating but I’ve heard some really bad copies in my time and some of the other tracks on this album illustrate this very well ! (check out Pussycats ‘Mississippi’ ugh…) Elsewhere there’s not a bad Elton and Kiki rendition and the cover of Sailors ‘Glass of Champagne’ is given sympathetic treatment. This type of album is never going to rate too many stars but that Queen cover keeps coming back time and time again and warrants repeated listening.
