Too much on display here is merely clever without really giving the listener space or time to savour what’s occurring.

Society Of Imaginary Friends, Sadness Is A Bridge To Love
Spend some time with imaginary friends. It’s really wonderful stuff.

Leon Jean Marie, Bent Out Of Shape
Impressive, but perhaps too un-showy for a mass audience that likes big voices and big gestures.

Shadow the Hedgehog (PS2) Shadow the Hedgehog is not necessarily the game you’d expect Sega to make after the stunning success of games such as Sonic Heroes and Sonic Mega Collection. Although it looks and plays fairly similarly to the former, albeit with only the one character at a time, it features anti-hero Shadow who instead of offing bad guys with a simple jump on their head is packing what looks suspiciously like a high calibre Desert Eagle pistol.

The image of a Sonic the Hedgehog lookalike using such a realistic piece of hardware is an oddly disturbing one and rather sours initial moments with the game. Luckily though the rest of the game reveals itself to be a more traditionally wholesome title as Shadow runs, jumps and err… shoots his way through levels.

In a nod to games such as Prince of Persia, Shadow can also manipulate time to his advantage and unleash the explosive “Chaos Blast” move. He can also make use of a variety of different vehicles including motorcycles, jeeps and alien spacecraft and pick up and use handy objects like streetlamps as weapons.

The choice of whether to turn to evil during the course of the game seems a bit out of a place for a Sonic game, although its not clear exactly how evil the game actually allows you to get. It’s not exactly GTA: Emerald City but it’s still rather odd to see such an iconic series take such an unwarranted trip to the Dark Side. — Harrison Dent

Customer Review: Good game!
Playing as the villain from a series of video games is always fun, and Shadow is no different. With a huge selection of weapons and vehicles in the different level, you can either plough through with a machine gun, or you can race through the level on your own two feet, or in a G.U.N Walker. One of the game’s key features is the two player mode. You can play as two different coloured versions of Shadow, or one of the four robot versions, each with an attached weapon. Depending on the path you take, you can be accompanied by different characters. Only the Hero path is of any use, as you can team up with Sonic’s friends, like Tails and Espio, who can be used by a second player. Eggman’s path uses just a small robot television, which can’t really do anything. Same with the Black Arms, only in this case it’s a floating, tentacled eye. Secret vehicles and weapons can be found on each level, providing you have found the keys dotted around the location. For example, there is a fun military vehicle on the first level. Big and armoured, so you don’t take as much fire from the enemies.
One drawback is the inability to play as other characters than Shadow in the multiplayer mode.
