Customer Review: Reasonable to good, but off the true Psychedelic radar.
Kaleidscope is a good overall offering, though not too far out (as, all too often on this album, we are brought back down to Earth by saccharine, high-pitched harmonies). The rest of it is just too, well, reminiscent of an `obladi oblada’ mind-set, and not very psychedelic or gently hippy-like at all. There are a few nice effects (fuzz, backwards recording etc.) dotted around the place, though they take a back seat, and there are a few gentler moments too, though these are a minority here - definitely more to see elsewhere. It seems as though there was so much of this type of music around the time - it is sometimes desperately hard to trawl out the good trippy psychedelia, or otherwise peaceful flowery hippy tunes, and sieve them out from the rest. Perhaps that is a little harsh, as there are good (or reasonable) tracks: Kaleidoscope (best track by far), And Yours Is A Piece Of Mine, I See The Rain, Fight Say The Mighty, Otherwise It’s Been A Perfect Day, and Man In A Shop. Better off trying Twink (Think Pink) or Silver Apples or Timothy Leary for true trippy psychedelia.
Customer Review: Gobsmackingly Good
Released as part of Castle’s “Psych-Pop Sessions” series, I decided to take a chance on this CD. I had seen Marmalade live in the early Seventies and always knew there was a bit more to them than the “Ob-ladi Ob-lada”, “Cousin Norman” singles etc. However I wasn’t prepared for how enjoyable a listen this album was. Any fan of British late 60s psychedelia will appreciate this and it makes you wonder what if they had taken the album route through their career instead of the singles route which came from record company pressure. I’m now off to buy the Tremeloes album in the same series “What a State I’m In” which is supposed to be even more mindblowing !
