Customer Review: ‘69 without the heavy breathing
‘Original Tracks by the Original Artists’ it says up the front of this compilation. Don’t you believe it! At least one track (’Durham Town’) is a later, inferior remake and, while they might be original recordings, other tracks featured are actually pale copies of genuine ‘69 hits. ‘Je T’Aime…’ was a greater success for Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg, reaching number one, than for ‘Sounds Nice’ (who they?); ditto ‘Aquarius’ – a hit for Fifth Dimension (not included here) rather than Paul Jones’s sad attempt, which only reached no. 45 in the charts (and yes, you got it, featured here).
EMI have better 1969 tracks than these in their archive: how much better this compilation would be with some of them instead.
