Rock ‘N Roll

Rock ‘N Roll
Customer Review: ROCK N’ F**KIN’ ROLL!!!
Became interested in the dolls after seeing their performance of ‘Jet Boy’ on an Old grey whistle test DVD. I thought about getting the seperate albums, but saw that the bulk of their stuff was on this excellantly priced compilation. This is no frills swaggering rock n’ roll. David Johansen proves that he has a great vocal style, and the rest of the band sound fantastic. The Doll’s were definatley one of those bands that I think have kept their credibility by having a such a great (but limited) output.

Customer Review: 20 tracks from one of the greatest bands ever…
This is an excellent 20-track compilation of the legandary New York Dolls- who along with Richard Hell/Voivoids, Johnny Thunders & Heartbreakers & Television sound positively contemporary compared to bands like Hives-Strokes-Vines etc.

The tracks come from the eponymous 1973 album produced by Todd Rundgren, 1974’s prophetic Too Much Too Soon and there are a few unreleased demo tracks (Lone Star Queen, Courgeous Cat Theme).

What got me hooked?- well a combination of the chapter on them in Nick Kent’s The Dark Stuff (see also the book Please Kill Me) and a clip of Looking for a Kiss that Morrissey chose when on Jools Holland in 1995/6 (?). This emanated from The Old Grey Whistle Test- also reissued on DVD this year. The band were just the coolest, though obviously it ended in tragedy, overdoses and appearing in a film with Hulk Hogan (David Johansen!).

Their influence is vast- the aforementioned Looking for a Kiss would be pilfered by the Sex Pistols for Problems- while bands like Japan,Hanoi Rocks, The Smiths, Motley Crue ,Guns’N'Roses ,The Manic Street Preachers, Suede and all the latest garage rock inspired bands would owe this lot a debt. The difference between the NY Dolls and wannabe’s like the Manics are THE SONGS.

As this CD demonstrates they had SONGS big time- Trash, Personality Crisis, Jet Boy, Vietnamese Baby (really!), It’s Too Late and Lone Star Queen. Imagine The Stooges playing Exile on Main Street on the worst drugs and you are near. Finally, the liner notes by Lenny Kaye (Nuggets, Horses, Easter)are a joy; Rock & Roll is an almost definitive reminder of one of the greatest bands ever…
