Customer Review: The music came from America yet they havn’t got these Ace sets
So far 9 Volumes and specials for Novelty,Country,Bubbling Under and even an extra called the Golden Age of Popular Music.
All highlights the hits and misses and include in the booklet chart positions in both America and the UK of the songs.More failed in this country that’s if they were even released.But that was all about to change once the Beatles era began.
This review applies equally to everything-there’s little point in providing info when its all been done in the booklets.
But I did notice one glaring ommission on a later volume which included Gabriel & the Angels “That’s life”-which has no info against it.This was a Swan recording from 1963 and its unlikely to be the real Angels who were on the charts over the period 1962/4.How for instance did they get permission to use the name? As this was a Swan recording it could have been one of their girl groups like the Swans using another name.
That’s life is a great piece of high school pop-listen to this among a batch of pop songs and it stands out-it is in fact an unknown and undiscovered classic

This is a great collection.
Many of the artists I have never heard of but you can tell they all belong to the same era when all pop songs were about being a teenager and falling in and out of love.
Some of the songs are well known, for example Louie Louie by the Kingsmen, which is an excellent example of dirty rock ‘n roll before the Rolling Stones really got going. Let’s Dance by Chris Montez is another song which you are bound to know.
There are a couple of ‘novelty’ records which I tend to skip when playing the CD (Mule Skinner Blues, Stranded in the Jungle). The best finds are several songs with female vocalists which are absolutely brilliant - Sally Go Round the Roses, A Thousand Stars, I love How You Love Me and Eddie My Love.
I really love playing this CD in the car. If you like late fifties/ early sixties American music you should buy it!
