Dad Rocks

Dad Rocks
Customer Review: Got Them All But It’s The Thought That Counts
So what if I already have all these tracks.

My 8 year old daughter bought this for me, the track listing is excellent and we rock together.

It’s a Dad and child thing and I don’t care about the artistic merits.

Just enjoy the music with whoever bought it for you.

Customer Review: SHAME ON YOU
Shame on you all if you have that little imagination, and that little love for your own father that you’d inflict this upon him. Okay, there is some good, and even some great music on this double album, but your dad, if he likes this style of music AT ALL should already have it all, probably on vinyl AND CD - ALREADY.
Imagine his disapointment when he finds this on the breakfast tray next to his burnt toast. His smile will be insincere and his ‘thank you’ will be forced through gritted teeth. Just get him some chocolates.

If This Is Rock and Roll I Want My Old Job Back

If This Is Rock and Roll I Want My Old Job Back
It was inevitable that someone would emerge from the Irish showband tradition to add rock & roll to the equation. Like all the most profitable ideas though, it only seemed obvious once someone had thought of it. If nothing else, the huge following gained by The Saw Doctors’ debut set illustrated what a wide-ranging thing Irishness is. If This Is Rock And Roll plays to the band’s greatest strength–a talent for rabble-rousing tunes which detail all manner of small town life. Diversity? Well, here’s the occasional lighters-aloft anthem such as “Sing A Powerful Song”. Exotic? How about “N17″–a rollicking offspring to Christy Moore’s emigrant hit “Don’t Forget Your Shovel”? Now add it all together and you’ve got yourself a national institution. As Irish as a pint of Guinness with a potato in it. –Peter Paphides

Customer Review: Show band at full throttle
An Irish five-piece who deliver all the passion and excitement of a showband at full throttle. This is melody and humour with a beat, a 60’s pop sound given a Celtic twist and driven by an unabashed determination to entertain.

This 1991 CD captures much of the excitement of a live band. These guys play with a vivacity which insists you get up and dance … or at least sing along relentlessly strumming your air guitar! There’s no fancy, pretentious superstar posing here - this is entertainment for the listener not a demand for adulation for the performers. It takes you back to a time when music was about boy-meets-girl on the dancefloor … a time when the guys on stage had to be able to play their instruments live and do so in a manner which kept your feet tapping. The Saw Doctors do that in spades!

Their songs look at love and lust and loss, and the economics of having to leave your home and go to another country just to earn a living. It’s an experience with which many Celts can identify. The lyrics allude to the politics of Ireland and the macro-economics of labour mobility. The lyrics allude to teenage emotions and teenage fantasies. The lyrics combine themes of life, love, and earning a living, of departure and loss, of moving on.

Tongue is firmly in cheek in places. The stand-out song is “I useta lover” - funny, irreverent, and a number which must be recognised as a rock classic. “Red cortina” and “N17″ are the other tracks which most gripped me, but a lot of the songs on the album catch your ear when they fit the right mood. Still a fresh, entertaining sound, an album you’ll play again and again.

Customer Review: Just class
Fantastic. Spirited and lively and completely feel good music with easy and catchy lyrics, when you have listened a few times you too will be singing along to the words. Hysterical madness, their inspiration coming from school girls to road signs. I found myself singing along in the car to some wary onlookers, but it is an album to let your hair down to, culchie rock with humour.

Combat Rock

Combat Rock
The final album by the Clash’s original Strummer/Jones incarnation is also their most inconsistent. There were musical and ideological rifts developing within the band, and it shows: the experimentation is almost as wild as Sandanista!’s (and the biggest experiment is heading away from their punk shiftiness and into a commercial rock sound), but they seem to be enjoying it less. The band’s stabs at funk and poetry aren’t terribly successful, but it all came together for two massive hits: “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” has the biggest, stupidest, most perfect riff this side of “Louie Louie,” and “Rock the Casbah” pulls the band’s politics, fine-honed sarcasm, and saw-toothed guitar sound into the service of a dance-floor beat. –Douglas Wolk

Customer Review: should i stay or should i go
what a masterpiece this song is and the clash were my favorite of the punk rock bands. i’m not a big punk rock kid, but the clash was my favorite. on this album it has the greatest punk song ever created in punk rock history should i stay or should i go and rock the casbah is a great tropical bar song.

Customer Review: Over -rated Punk Rock!
I bought this based on others reviews and boy was i disappointed.Take way the two singles and you have a rambling album-whats with all the spoken word bits? Perhaps its because theres little music of any real value outside of the singles.

Rock Monsters

Rock Monsters
Customer Review: Monster of a CD
I go power walking every morning and need music to motivate me. This CD is one of my Favourites and certainly keeps up the right momentum for me. Classic great rock tunes…every one a winner!

Customer Review: Don’t drive while listening to this album.
This is a true monster of an album. If you’re tired of today’s production-line boy / girl teeny pop bands with their “where have I heard that mundane melody before” type songs, then dim the lights, pour yourself a nice glass of wine, turn your CD player up to 11 (very loud) and enjoy the sound of stretched guitar strings, overdriven amplifiers and strained soaring vocals. (Man that was a long sentence). Oh yeah you’ll find yourself saying man a lot after a few listens.

The School of Rock

The School of Rock
Customer Review: First rate old school music for young generations
Although I do not own this album, I know several of the classic songs included in it. Kudos to the creative minds behind the movie and its soundtrack, for they’re introducing young generations to the great world of first rate, old school rock (a territory I’m pretty familiar with).

I’ve seen this movie several times simply because I love the way these kids rock. However, my heart ultimately goes to Maryam Hassan, who plays the character of ultra shy Tomika, for two reasons:

1) Her incredible, mind blowing, vintage Rhythm & Blues voice reminded me that there’s a widely rich, varied and rather idiosyncratic universe called old school African American music, a territory I’m eager to explore after hearing her. And, as far as I know, she was only ten years old when the movie was made!.

2) I also have extra pounds.

In the words of the late soul giant Marvin Gaye, right on Maryam. If you ever get to read this review, please be so kind as to keep up the good work. I believe you might be the next Aretha Franklin, and, given the dismal quality of the majority of popular music being made today, the world badly needs another “Lady Soul”.

But let’s not forget that this movie is about Rock & Roll, so I would like to give the following advices to the rest of the kids: keep rocking hard, with total frenzy and abandon, and try to find “your own voice”. If you’re so great at the age of ten, you might take rock to the next level in the future. That’s exactly what four Brits known as Led Zeppelin did. Once again, the world badly needs a generation of gifted, groundbreaking rock musicians.

Finally, here’s my recommendation to everyone who wishes to be introduced to the wonderful world of truly great Rock & Roll: buy this Soundtrack, pick up your favorite artist(s), and start your own Rock CD collection. Yes, you read it right: CD collection. Chances are that, at least the classic albums by the artists included in this record have been remastered and reissued in “Deluxe” packages with nice booklets that include comprehensive liner notes and many photographs.

Customer Review: Not as good as i thought.
The film was good, and i liked the music, so i bought this. I put it into my stereo and sat back to listen. The best track is propbably Fight by No Vacancy, are they a real band?
Only buy this if you are a fan of rock as most of the music is quite old, but there are some new tunes on like Growing on me from the darkness.
It isn't as good as i thought it would be. There are some tracks i don't like, Touch me Ballrooms of mars primarily, but apart from that everything is good.
