The Golden Age of American Rock ‘n’ Roll Vol.11

The Golden Age of American Rock ‘n’ Roll Vol.11
Customer Review: Congratulations to ACE!
After their wonderful series of the Golden Era of American Rock & Roll

(10 Volumes) ACE suddenly surprises us 5 years later with an 11th volume.

Like they always do, the extensive 28 page liner notes help us to find

out the whereabouts of each and every song and that makes these series

unique (Teeanager Crush series + all the other American Rock & Roll

releases). Even if the contents of a volume may have minor hits or

the selection used isn’t as good as others, these booklets make each

and every one of them a 5 star rating! The highlights of this Volume 11

are Lavern Baker’s Jim Dandy (one of the first real authentic R&R songs)

Lavender Blue by Sammi Turner (never seen before on a compilation), I

Need Your Lovin’ by Conway Twitty (No not that one..), Pretend by Carl

mann, the incredible Drip Drop by the early Drifters (later covered

by Dion who had a bigger success with it), the original Let The Good

Times Roll etc. etc.

Like all the other 10, just prepare yourself and put on your rockin’

shoes!

Customer Review: Up to standard
Ace has issued over the years possibly the best collections of American music covering all bases from rockabilly to high school pop to uptown soul.Fortunately the Golden Age ends by their definition around the mid 60s so it saves having to put up with more reruns of Motown or Stax.

These sets work on 2 levels really-the fact packed booklets and the more obscure items such as the Bubbling Under series.Perhaps a future series could issue No Hit Wonders-after all the bulk of it was as good as the stuff on the Top 100 and a lot of collectors are very interested in Musical failure.

Its also good to see this is not Rock Critics stuff-I don’t need to be told yet again that Pat Boone was ripping off black music.Which he wasn’t as many now realise.Everyone is treated equally because these are for a new generation

Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll

Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll
Customer Review: A luxurious heavy rock dream
This is the only album in my entire rock/metal collection to which I give 10 out of 10.

Customer Review: Rising doesnt rise enough
This IS Rainbows finest moment, no doubt. Love every song and it contains my favourite song (and registered most played on my i-tunes by a long chalk), Kill the King. Every song is a classic and as a whole the album is just begging for the listener to crank up the volume and blast it out. Dio at his absolute best.

Still the Same: Great Rock Classics of Our Time

Still the Same: Great Rock Classics of Our Time
Unquestionably one of rock’s greatest vocalists, Rod Stewart should have titled this album Great Rock Classics of My Time. Most of these Top 40 tunes and others like Dylan’s “If Not for You” were popularized in the early to mid-’70s, when Stewart was entering his rock prime. He’s perfect to croon Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” soulfully pained on Bonnie Tyler’s “It’s a Heartache,” and right in the pocket on the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand by You.” And his unmistakable raspiness puts another layer of wisdom on the old Cat Steven’s classic “Father & Son.” But you also have to wonder about some of the safe song choices, such Badfinger’s “Day After Day” and Nazareth’s “Love Hurts.” Why he continues to record mossy cover songs is a legitimate question. What’s stopping him from getting back in trenches with some contemporary rock songwriters and really reinventing himself? The karaoke lounge is no place for a guy this great to hang. –Martin Keller

Customer Review: GREAT!
This CD is great! It had me singing along with the tracks-and is a happy CD with a great sound to it. Take no notice of the negative comments! Maybe the person who gave negative vibes got out of bed the wrong side that day. If you like Rod Stewart, wou will enjoy this CD. It is rock classics, so if you don’t know the songs you can’t say - oh, this one! that’s so brilliant to hear again! but you will still love the sound. With the richness of Rod’s voice and his interpretation of the songs all I can say is I love it! Wait till to hear Have you Ever Seen the Rain, I’ll Stand By You, It’s a Heartache, If Not For You….in fact all 14 tracks. Thanks Rod - I think you are great!

Customer Review: Oh no, not another contractual obligation album !
I like Rod Stewart, I really do. With the Faces, he made some of the best loose and trashy pop rock ever. And the early solo albums had a similar feel, not surprisingly, since he somehow managed to persuade most of the Faces to work as his studio backing band on several of them.

The backing tracks on this are classy, well played and recorded. Likewise the vocals. Unfortunately I can’t make up my mind exactly who phoned what in. It seem obvious to me that Rod and the band never saw the inside of the same studio at the same time. No feel, no empathy, no connection between singer and band.

Driving Rock Ballads

Driving Rock Ballads
Customer Review: The essential driving CD
When driving it doesn’t matter how cheesy or par ce a song is just as long as you can sing along to it and crank up the volume. With this box box set you get a mix of the loud, the power ballads and the downright dodgy all in one.

Some of the more delightful of offerings come from Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac and Chris Rea(Who has the driving anthems market covered in my view) Spun over three discs there are ample tunes to get you pipes around here. T’Pau, Phil Collins and The Cars, with their awesome “Drive” are there to give you your dosage of power ballads.

This CD will obviously appeal massively to dad’s and would be a perfect fathers day present or birthday present but unfortunately I must confess that I love this box set too and i’m still a teenager. To be honest it would be a classic collection to have for the whole family to endure in the car and pass Mike And The Mechanics on to the next generation of helpless kids who will end up being closet fans all their lives.

Enjoy!

California Dreaming: the Cream of La’s Seventies Rock

California Dreaming: the Cream of La’s Seventies Rock
Customer Review: Highway 1 - Revisited
Concur fully with the previous review by Country Grumpkin (what a wonderful pseudonym) that this excellent compilation represents perfect accompaniment for a long drive. Where better for that than Highway 1, which runs down the West Coast of California from the North in San Francisco, through Monterey and Carmel, past Big Sur and Saint Simeon on South towards Laurel Canyon and L.A.

What particularly appeals about this offering, is the attention paid by the compiler to linking the sequence of tracks by some kind of association to what precedes and that which follows. For example, we have Buffalo Springfield followed by Stephen Stills and then Crazy Horse. Later, there is Jackson Browne followed by The Eagles, The Flying Burrito Brothers by Gram Parsons and finally Canned Heat by The Grateful Dead, both of whom appeared at The Woodstock Festival. Consequently, this set has very good continuity, it really flows from one track to the next like a gently flowing tide. I would like to endorse the inclusion of the following tracks, not mentioned in the previous review: Love`s - Alone again or (From the majestic “Forever changes” Album), Joni Mitchell`s - Blue (From the Album of the same title) Fleetwood Mac`s - Don`t stop ( From their platinum disc “Rumours”) and last but not least two singles Jo Jo Gunne`s fine “Run, Run ,Run” and America`s beautiful “Horse with no name”.

However, perhaps the biggest surprise is the exclusion of the Title Song itself “California Dreaming”, since in essence that song would carry this collection forward from The Long Hot Summer thru The Fall and into Winter, when the song was composed by John Phillips in New York City. Thus making this a good all year round choice, especially when driving. Have a good trip.

Customer Review: Hit that highway, man, with the sounds of sunny California
As our long, hot summer bears down on us, here’s another California compilation to play - loudly - in the car. Just to annoy the neighbours, and all those who may be parked alongside you on the M1 or M25. It follows the same pattern of previous compilations such as ‘Take It Easy: The Sound Of California’, ‘Back To California: Ladies And Gentlemen Of The LA Canyons’ et al. Most of the usual suspects are here, with mostly a different (if familiar) track from their repertoire, including: Byrds, Eagles, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, La Ronstadt and JT. It’s good to see that Judee Sill, Ned Doheny and John David Souther are here also, though Karla Bonoff would have been a treat. Many songs are very familiar: ‘Witchy Woman’ (Eagles), ‘Take It Easy’ (Jackson Browne), ‘Fire And Rain’ (James Taylor), ‘Werewolves Of London’ (Warren Zevon), ‘Everybody’s Talkin” (Nilsson), ‘You’re So Vain’ (Carly Simon), and suchlike. But there’s also Gene Clark’s ‘Life’s Greatest Fool’, Arlo Guthrie’s ‘When The Ship Comes In’, ‘Miles Away’ (Marc Cohn) and ‘Road To Cairo’ (David Ackles). Inevitably, on any compilation, some are missing - even one or two who arguably may have had more impact on California music than some of those here. The Beach Boys, Pure Prairie League and John Phillips (solo) are in absentia. Still, we shouldn’t be churlish. As Napoleon nearly once said, all the best compilers are sitting in their armchairs. The 40 tracks here should get you well over 150 miles if the roads are good. If not, let the sunny sounds of California transport you somewhere else. Right then, where are we headin’?

Kings of Rock ‘n’ Roll: the Best of Prefab Sprout

Kings of Rock ‘n’ Roll: the Best of Prefab Sprout
Customer Review: Another ‘Best Of’, but still great
Well, after this year’s ‘Steve McQueen: Legacy Edition/Remastered & Expanded’ I didn’t think we’d hear of any more Sprout releases, but here we are with a ‘Best Of’. Again.

Despite this, I’m still giving it 5 stars, but what a lot of Sprout fans would like to see is a ‘B sides and rarities’ compilation.

Is that too much to ask for after 3 ‘best of’ collections? I think not.

Get your finger out, Kichenware, or whoever is now responsible for Prefab Sprout’s back catalogue.

Oh, and if you haven’t got any Prefab Sprout albums, this is as good a place to start as any. You won’t regret it.

100 Hits - Rock

100 Hits - Rock
Customer Review: 100 Hits - Rock
FINALLY! — A huge, 5 CD box set with many of the greatest hits from the finest type of music - rock!. Many of rock’s finest artists such as Bonnie Tyler, Meat Loaf, Skid Row, Europe and Alice Cooper are featured within 101 songs with a couple of their greatest hits. A nice mix of artists and not a rip off as every song was huge back in day making this a super value box set at an unbelievable price for such quality. This collection spans 5 decades of truely decent music, from Cheap Trick’s “I Want You To Want Me” to the awesome “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by The Darkness. The music varies from heavey to light rock but i do like almost every song on here, over 5o of them have been put onto my ipod. If you are a fan of rock music then this collection is a must have, if you were around during those years of the songs release, the memories will all come flooding back to you, I can guarantee it.

Fully recommended, a super release!

Joe Strummer - Let’s Rock Again

Joe Strummer - Let’s Rock Again
Customer Review: Great Film
Of all the Dvds I have watched about Joe this is by far the best capturing the man and his music at there best. Buy it youwon’t regret it.

Customer Review: The Greatness of Joe Strummer.
“Let’s Rock Again” is worth watching on several levels. First, the video provides a first-hand account of the formation of Joe Strummer’s final project, The Mescaleros. From the lips of Joe and the rest of the band, you learn the “where”, “why” and “how” of Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros. For those who never had the opportunity to witness the band live, the video provides some excellent concert footage that is testimony both to Joe’s own musical brilliance as well as the musicianship of his supporting cast.

Perhaps more meaningful is the insight to the man himself that the video provides. What comes through most is Joe’s essential honesty, integrity and humility. Despite Joe Strummer’s status as the frontman for one of Rock’s most influential and enduring bands, Joe never lost sight of the work it took to obtain that status nor the fleeting nature of fame.

In discussing the genesis of The Mescaleros project, Joe talks about the rise and fall of The Clash as well as the rise, fall and rebirth of Joe Strummer. The common theme is Joe’s dedication to the music and to his fans. This is most evident in the video as Joe literally ‘pounds the pavement’ in Atlantic City to promote his new band, meeting people on the street, handing out flyers true to the spirit of the revolutionary that Joe always was.

In a world with an excess of poseurs and increasingly short on originality, this video pays tribute to a legendary peformer and reminds us of why Joe Strummer remains sadly missed. Rest in peace, Joe.

Born to Rock ‘n’ Roll - the Greatest Hits

Born to Rock ‘n’ Roll - the Greatest Hits
Customer Review: Rock icon, the pioneering Marty Wilde, still the best 50 years on …
For those of you who remember Marty Wilde in his late 50’s-early 60’s prime this will prove a timely reminder of what a fine vocalist this UK rock pioneer was … and very much still is.

This superb 25-track compilation is to celebrate Marty’s 50 years in music and naturally includes all the classic hits like Endless Sleep, Donna, Teenager In Love and Sea Of Love. His finest two singles, the 1961 self-penned Orbison-like Tomorrow’s Clown and 1962 Peter Gunn-like driving, rocking revival of Jezebel are standouts along with his two original compositions which hit the US Top 50 (no mean feat in those days) Bad Boy (1959) and Abergavenny (1968).

There are incomparable atmospheric deliveries on Danny and Johnny Rocco; more Wilde originals, the beautiful Jesamine (a No2 hit for the Casuals in 1968) and You’ll Never Be So Wrong (an 80’s favourite with daughter Kim and Hot Chocolate); and Marty’s own take on rock ‘n’ roll classics like Little Sister, It’s Been Nice, It’s Late, Apron Strings and the ballad Dream Lover.

Who can forget the Wilde cameo styling of Bill Parsons’ rockabilly All American Boy, Marty’s sensitive interpretation of By The Time I Get To Phoenix or his hit version of the catchy Little Girl. His two duets with his daughters, I’m Leaving It All Up To You (with Roxanne Wilde) and newly-recorded Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word (with Kim Wilde) are brilliant.

This collection of vintage Wilde favourites, plus newer material seals his status as the greatest British vocalist to emerge from the rock ‘n’ roll era and still a crowd pulling performer today as his 50th Anniversary UK tour in April-May 2007 will prove.

In the words of this album’s closing anthem, Born To Rock and Roll, this UK icon certainly was.

This album is sheer class and a must-have … no question.
