30 Years of Rock - The Greatest Hits
Customer Review: 6 Star Album……
Bought on a whim and boy am I glad I did. I had no idea that there was such a talent.

This album rocks from start to finish. I shall investigate these guys seriously.

Well worth buying if you like rocking blues.

Fabulous.

Customer Review: these destroyers are a great blues band
George Thorogood and the destroyers are my favorite blues rock band, and they are the best along with ZZ Top and Bad Company. I bought this cd 5 months ago, because i was interested in Bad to the Bone song, wow that song is great that has the funniest lyrics i have ever heard they make me laugh. It also remains as my favorite song by the Destroyers. George thorogood is also a big drinker too, he did some other of my favorites like One bourbon, one scotch, One beer , Move it on over, and I Drink Alone. especially one bourbon, one scotch, one beer is a 8 in a half minute long song that starts out with a story, it soon rocks as the solos kick in overrall an excellent track. Move it on over is blues at the finest! I really dont think that WHO DO YOU LOVE song is that great. BUT I DRINK ALONE is pretty good, another party song. anyways that is all i feel about commenting about it.

In Rock: 25th Anniversary Edition

In Rock: 25th Anniversary Edition
Monolithic, immense and enduring–much like that cover image: the band-members’ heads carved into the side of a mountain, a la Mt. Rushmore. Perhaps they felt they’d earned such veneration, having emerged relatively unscathed from the experience of Jon Lord’s overblown Concerto For Group And Orchestra. Whatever the rationale, the band regrouped in early 1970–complete with new vocalist Ian Gillan–and set about making one of the decade’s undisputed hard-rock classics. For all their undoubted power–and despite the jazzy inflections of Ian Paice’s drumming–there’s little in the way of groove to these tracks; rather, they’re about volume and density, the simple piling-on of dynamics. Clocking in at over ten minutes, “Child In Time” ranks as a classic of its kind, while tracks like “Speed King” and “Into The Fire” see the band at its most unfettered–Richie Blackmore and Lord trading solos with a dazzling sort of ease, and Gillan loosing the full-throated roar for which he soon became renowned. –Andrew McGuire

Customer Review: On fire
An explosion of guitar, cascading sparks, then the settling into serene organ: so begins ‘In Rock’ and Deep Purple’s halcyon period. The contrast between Ritchie Blackmore’s opening burst and what he did on the previous studio album with the old line-up is obvious. Here, he is unrestrained, whereas he seemed more like an anonymous team player for too much of the album. The earlier recordings were mildly impressive, but, particularly with a more dynamic vocalist in Ian Gillan upfront, the band show an unprecedented sleekness and flamboyance.

‘Speed King’ is of a much higher octane than before, while ‘Child In Time’ shows that DP could create some beautiful slower tracks. Gillan’s reading, in tandem with Jon Lord’s organ-playing, is exceptional. It’s a far more compelling track than ‘April,’ the epic which closed their third album. ‘Speed King’ and ‘Child In Time’ are acknowledged DP classics, but you won’t find any makeweights among the supporting tracks. ‘Flight Of The Rat’ has the same drive as ‘Speed King’ and ‘Into The Fire’ is a suitably malevolent, intense performance. The dirtier ‘Hard Lovin’ Man’ is a fitting end to the album proper. ‘Bloodsucker’ and ‘Living Wreck’ are not quite as good in terms of content, but DP’s finesse and flamboyance carries them through effortlessly. And just for good measure, you get another classic, ‘Black Night,’ as a bonus track. One of the great hard rock albums of any era.

Customer Review: You want hard rock? THIS is Hard Rock.
I was 16 when I picked this up in 1970. I had already dug the first incarnation of Purple’s work on “Lalena” by Donovan,”Blind”,”Chasing Shadows”, “Hard Road (Wring That Neck)”, “The Shield”, the stunning baroque rock “April”, “Emmeretta”, “Bird Has Flown”…but when Nic Simper & Rod Evans were replaced by Ian Gillian & Roger Glover, we had a *whole* different animal. This was the same year that “Led Zeppelin II” and “Black Sabbath” crossed my turntable….and this still gets played whenever I need a shot of adrenaline over the other two. This is truly the first major limb on the massive tree of metal rock.

Much as I have a fondness for the energy of punk music, I gotta tell the youngsters, “There was a reason these ‘older’, precursor, bands played in arenas: they were the only places big enough to contain the fans, the band and the sheer SOUND.

Without Jon Lord on keyboards, they MIGHT have been just another rock band. Jon was vying with Keith Emerson & Rick Wakeman for the title of King of Keys. He might not be as dextrous as speeder Emerson (possibly the fastest keyboard alive during the late 60s & 70s), or as whimsical and imaginative as Wakeman, but he laid down some soul, my oh my. ” Child In Time” and ” Lazy” (from ‘Machine Head’) show what the man could coax out. Whooo-hooo! Blackmore’s hardly every been better than here.

They were kids! Early 20s, tops. Eat your heart out, Metallica. As for ACDC,Nirvana,Sonic Youth,Judas Priest,Van Halen–just remember whose lap you sat on before you diss the mother.

This Is Psychedelia: Over 3 Hours of Mind-Expanding Acid Rock

This Is Psychedelia: Over 3 Hours of Mind-Expanding Acid Rock
Customer Review: Anyone bother to ask if Lou Reed was ‘psychedelic’?
I don’t own this compilation, although I’m familiar with nearly all of the music. Whilst most tracks may reasonably be categorised as ‘psychedelic’, the elephant in the room is surely The Velvet Underground, whose presence here suggests that the compiler was using too much of the product which inspired everyone else on the album.

Calling the Velvets a psychedelic band is a bit like calling Frank Zappa a hippie, their music as distant from psychedelia as New York City is from California. The Velvets came from an altogether more sinister place than the West Coast bands, using heavier drugs to explore darker instincts than the sunnier, more optimistic climes of psychoactives. Tripping out to ‘White Rabbit’ always seemed to make sense; try it with ‘Venus in Furs’, however, and you could be storing up a mess of trouble.

Customer Review: ‘An Intelligently Compiled, Excellent Value, Box Set’
As somewhat of a newcomer myself to the delights of psychedelic music, I must say that this cd box set for ‘newbies’ like myself seems to be the perfect place to start. Whenever you are unfamiliar with a new genre of music, its always nice to come across the odd hit single here and there and this collection manages to strike the balance between the obviously familiar and the not so obvious. Tracks like Jefferson Airplane’s ‘White Rabbit’ and Status Quo’s ‘Pictures Of Matchstick Men’ of course I already knew but killer tracks like The Mooche’s ‘Hot Smoke And Sassafrass’ and It’s A Beautiful Day’s wonderful (best track on the whole set for me) ‘White Bird’ I’d never heard before. Each cd works well as a listen in its own right which is a distinct bonus and all 3 cd’s contain a very strong selection of tracks. What with this and the also excellent ‘Marmalade Skies’ compilation I think I am learning fast about great 60’s music and enjoying how to appreciate music from the era. If you’ll pardon the pun this set is a great trip (through time) so treat yourself.

Hot Rocks Vol.1 1964-1971

Hot Rocks Vol.1 1964-1971
Customer Review: Here “hot” really means “hot”!
If you ever want an overview of some of the greatest songs the stones made during theire first magic decade, this album is it. It's wonderful to hear the playfulness of the songs and the unmistakable rolling stones groove.

Customer Review: Uncompromising rock n roll genius
The Rolling Stones spent much of the sixties in the shadow of the Beatles and, with regards to their respective albums, perhaps deservedly so. However, as this 2-disc retrospective proves, they were every bit as important as their clean-cut contemporaries.

To its credit, Hot Rocks is weighted very much in favour of their late sixties output, which was undoubtedly their best work. Of the early sixties singles, the inclusion of the likes of Time Is On My Side and Heart Of Stone seems a little strange, at the expense of more historically important cuts such as Not Fade Away or It’s All Over Now. However, these tracks do lend to the overall mood of the album, so it’s a small gripe.

From the opening riff of Satisfaction, we are taken on a breathtaking ride through the sixties according to the World’s Greatest Rock N Roll Band. Paint It Black, Honky Tonk Women, Brown Sugar. Every track is pure gold. Sympathy For The Devil, Gimme Shelter, the huge, orchestral You Can’t Always Get What You Want, and finally, the lovely country ballad, Wild Horses.

Quite simply put, this CD is brilliant, and I cannot praise it highly enough. It is easily the finest collection of popular rock songs ever gathered together onto one volume, and that includes the Beatles equivalent Red and Blue albums. The real question you are now facing, is whether you should buy it now or five minutes ago. So go on, what are you waiting for?

Blue Man Group - The Complex Rock Tour - Live [2003] (NTSC)

Blue Man Group - The Complex Rock Tour - Live [2003] (NTSC)
Customer Review: Awesome, Original, and Inspiring
All I can Say is, BUY IT, WATCH IT, AND WATCH IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. The BMG are just the most awesome display of mass percussion, engrossing rhythms and originality you will find. Period. Can't rate the dvd highly enough.

Customer Review: Awesome!!!
I just happened to see a poster of them outside a theatre i was walking past in Toronto last year (2005)saying that they were performing live there that night and i promptly bought a ticket there and then. I had only seen quick clips of them on TV commercials so i thought it would be interesting to see what they were all about and i was not disappointed.

The choreography was well timed, the music was gripping and the whole show was entertaining. The only difference to the live show i saw as opposed to this DVD was that the musicians were playing their instruments behind glass partitians in their illuminous skeleton outfits which added more ambiance to the show. You could even have photos and a chat with them as you were leaving the theatre which i thought was the icing on the cake.

I recommend this DVD, but recommend you see them live even more to get the whole effect and atmosphere, only then can you describe to your friends and family what it was like.

Big Rock Candy Mountain: 23 Songs for Children

Big Rock Candy Mountain: 23 Songs for Children
Customer Review: Something a bit different
This CD is fabulous for anyone to listen to but my 18 month old daughter has always loved it too. We play her tracks 18 till 23 (the end) every night as she goes to bed and Bing’s velvet tones do the trick every night. A word of caution: these soporific songs often have the same effect on my husband and I as we listen via the baby monitor!

Customer Review: I love this cd!!
This is a wonderful cd. My daughter loves it!! You can’t beat old fashioned songs and old fashioned music. Brilliant to sing along to. Every song is a vivid little story. Magical.

For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)

For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)
Lesser bands might have been put off their stride by the death of their lead singer, but not AC/DC. No sooner had Bon Scott met his whiskey-sodden end in 1980 than AC/DC recruited a new singer, Brian Johnson–who sounded almost exactly like Scott–and released, in Back In Black, the biggest-selling album of their career. For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) is a suitably triumphant follow-up. The cannon-punctuated title track–the most auspicious marriage of music and artillery since Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture”–still provides a spectacular finale to AC/DC concerts. For Those About To Rock… also confirmed that Johnson’s lyrical preoccupations were broadly congruent with those of his predecessor: “Let’s Get It Up” and “Inject The Venom” are as subtle as they sound. For Those About To Rock… is a record Beavis & Butthead would describe as “cool”–and, as usual, they’d be right.–Andrew Mueller

Customer Review: Power, class, style….another classic album
This is one hell of an album. Different to Back In Black in that the songs, whilst having big choruses, were not necessarily radio-friendly as much as tunes like You Shook Me All Night long or even Back In Black itself. The band went for an enormous production, again via Mutt Lange, but although it’s a huge sound, it’s not lacking in character or over-produced. The songs are interesting, unique in places, diverse, and among the most inspired the band have come up with. A real hard-rock album, a long way apart from something like Powerage, yet still with the band’s hallmark all over it. Brian Johnson at his peak was an awesome, one-off vocalist (still sounding like no-one else and doing a decent job today by the way), and although he was perhaps enduring slight vocal chord nodules around this time, his performance on this record is pretty stunning from start to finish. Angus’ solos were drenched with the usual superb, wide vibrato and flowing blues runs, and the whole thing hasn’t aged at all in the last 25 years. In my opinion, AC/DC made 6 classic albums in a row: Powerage, If You Want Blood, Highway to Hell, Back In Black, For Those About To Rock and Flick of the Switch. An amazing band.

Customer Review: Very good
We all know about the title track. I love the whole album. Full of great riffs and great solo’s. The whole band is up to scratch here and it is a worthy follower of back in black.

Best track-For those about to rock

Mr. Rock ‘n’ Roll
Customer Review: WILL GO FAR!
I first heard Amy on ‘This Morning’ and was really surprised, after hearing her speak, how she sung. Assertive, slight country and a bit of Scottish! Truly amasing. Lovely person, unique voice and unique tune. In astonishment I woke up a couple of days after (only heard Amy once) with Amy’s song going round in my head … I think that’s a first!

My preferences are ‘The Cranberries’ and ‘The Beautiful South’. I now have ‘Amy MacDonald.

Very best of luck Amy.

Customer Review: Great Vocalist. Very Catchy Tune!!!
I saw this on Youtube and immediately thought it was a catchy song. Ive heard it since on Ken Bruce’s show. This song is great. I wouldn’t like to try and make comparisons because it sounds unique. A catchy Indie/Pop song with dare i say a slight Country feel to it. I can see Amy Macdonald having a very bright future in the music industry and very well deserved too (Judging by this track). Will look forward to receiving the single from Amazon.
