Rock ‘n’ Roll Jesus: Parental Advisory

Rock ‘n’ Roll Jesus: Parental Advisory
Customer Review: Totally different, totally awesome
Have only been a recent convert to the Kid Rock scene recently, despite hearing the ‘Devil Without A Cause’ track many years ago.

Looking at the progression from ‘Devil’, through ‘Cocky’ to this, his style appears to be changing, and a certain mellowing with age does seem to be apparent; apart from ‘So Hott’ and ‘Sugar’, the use of his more colourful language is reducing and the style is going more country and less rap/rock.

Not that this is a bad thing, by any stretch. Most of these tracks are instantly addictive with their catchy tunes (the deep-south swing of ‘New Orleans’ being a notable example), hard-hitting and often humorous lyrics (Lowlife being full of some great lines, as is the intro talk to ‘Half your age’) and their funky style; this album sounds like Kid had some fun in the studio rather than being focused on trying to get some issues off his chest.

Customer Review: THE BEST YET
BELIEVE IT ..THE KID ROCK IS BACK WITH HIS BEST OFFERING YET. ALL I CAN ADVISE IS IF YOU EVER LIKED THE KID THEN TAKE A CHANCE .. I AM SURE YOU WILL AGREE- NO DUFFERS

Abide with Me - 50 Favourite Hymns
Customer Review: Inspiring Collection
I have often listened to church music thinking to myself is it all manifested in the same place and released under different titles? However this selection ‘hits the spot’ with some great renditions of worshipful music and if you like to listen to part singing then cd 1 is excellent. There also some lovely descants some of which i had not heard before, an inspiring selection. Excellent.

Customer Review: Excellent!
Excellent quality, and a good selection of hymns to choose from. Was very impressed, and would recommend to anyone looking for a CD (or two!) of British hymns.

Rock Swings

Rock Swings
Customer Review: An amazing idea
As a fan of both the rock and jazz scenes, I couldn’t help but buy this as soon as I heard the track “Smells like teen spirit” on Radio 2 the other day…

This is one of the best cover interpretations I have heard in a long time. Sure, the style does not suit ALL of the songs (and I am talking one or two) but the rest sound immaculate, almost as if they were written for swing. Personally, I could not want any more (apart from maybe a rock swings 2!)

Customer Review: a really unique album

This is not an album I play often, I admit, but it’s worth owning if only for the fun of startling and cheering up friends. Not all of the songs are effective in swing style, but watching someone’s face trying to place familiar lyrics in Anka context is hilarious.

Soundboy Rock

Soundboy Rock
Seven albums in, and if Groove Armada show no sign of handing in their chill-out crowns, Soundboy Rock suggests London’s popular downbeat alchemists are more eager than ever to branch out. As the title suggests, this is an album that plays down Groove Armada’s cocktail-supping Balearic side in favour of a more robust sound inspired by hip-hop, house and dub reggae. Immediate highlights are “Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control)”, which could almost be a long-lost Madonna single of the ’80s, but for the fact it features ex-Sugarbabe Mutya Buena on vocals; and the title track, a simmering reggae skank that sees Groove Armada joined by their MC, MAD, and Hard-Fi’s Richard Archer on melodica. It’s a surprisingly guest heavy record - also on board is Alan Donohue of The Rakes, soul queen Angie Stone, Tony Allen of The Good, The Bad, And The Queen, and Simon Lord of Simian Mobile Disco. Being old hands now, however, Groove Armada are wise not to let this celebrity cavalcade distract them from the matter at hand - that is, making bouncy, unpretentious dance music that balances a crate-digger’s taste with maximum mainstream appeal. –Louis Pattison

Customer Review: Mixed bag of tracks
After “Vertigo” and, even more so, the excellent “Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)”, I’ve got to admit this is something of a letdown. Though this is by no means bad (in the traditional sense), it’s a very mixed bag of tracks most of which are much too radio-friendly for my taste and more often than not sound a bit shallow to these ears. No real standouts, unfortunately. PS: “Song 4 Mutya” doesn’t have anything to do with Madonna, Human League or A Flock of Seagulls (oh my God!), for that matter. The riff and groove are culled from “Let’s Be Adult” by Arto Lindsay & Ambitious Lovers from their excellent 1984 album “Envy”.

Customer Review: Progression Is A Wonderful Thing!
I’ve been a sporadic lover of the “Armada” tending to gravitate toward the mighty Faithless and Groove Armada’s poppier twin Basement Jaxx, (my own opinion natch..), I have to admit my interest was fired up again because of two things, watching the live gig on DVD (in a very smokey Amsterdam coffee shop, go figure), plus finding out that the equally smokey Mutya Buena was to collaborate. Well,I have to report Groove Armada are back with an outing of gargantuan proportions, the Yello tinged “Hasta Luego” opener to the Bambataa beats of “Save Our Soul”, Ibiza tinged grooves of “The Things We Could Share” and the AWESOME “Feel The Same”, (available on the *bonus tracks release)vie with the laid back feel of title track “Soundboy Rock” , (surely a nod to let the fans know that the ‘Groove is still a toking ensemble?). Theres also Orb-like atmospherics “Whats Your Version/s”, including great dance structures “Get Down”, “Lightsonic”, “All The Girls Say” and “Drop That Thing “. Which brings me to “Song For Mutya/Out Of Control” which seems to draw mainly on the sounds of the 80’s, Human League/A. F. O. S. (ask your Dad..),Depeche Mode and maybe even a wee bit Big Audio Dynamite? All in a noughties style this will grow to be THE summer 2007 sing along hook, fantastic! Add in a handful of Groove Armada ecleticity and your there. (*Get the bonus tracks versh ‘k?)

Let There Be Rock

Let There Be Rock
This is rock as its most unapologetic: raw, aggressive, basic, full-on metal with more than a touch of schoolboy sexism. 1980’s Robert “Mutt” Lange-produced Back In Black might’ve been where the Australian band hit it big, but one has to return to the gritty, guttural tones of original singer Bon Scott to appreciate AC/DC at their fiercest. In particular, the garage, almost punk-style production on “Problem Child”, the title track and denim classic “Whole Lotta Rosie” showcased the Young brothers’ no-nonsense riffing technique at its hardest and most ass-kicking. Metal was built on albums like this: Black Sabbath’s debut, Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy–no-nonsense screaming coupled with often childish lyrics matched to the most primal of riffs. An unbeatable combination. –Everett True

Customer Review: A corker
A raw, bone-dry production is matched emphatically with grinding guitars and a rock-solid rhythm section on this classic album. The songs on this album have real character; not the sing-along anthems of their 80’s and 90’s material, but pure blues-based hard rock with riffs, powerful vocals, amusing lyrics, and awesome leads from Angus Young. The character of his note selection and vibrato is equalled only by Bon Scott’s rasping, leering vocals - but there’s always a sense of melody behind the noise. Malcplm Young’s rhythm guitar relentless chimes out powerchords, whilst bass and drums complete the backbone of a very special band in fine form. Footnote: Angus Young’s amp started smoking and partially caught fire during the solo to the title track. He nearly stopped when he saw his brother, George, gesticulating from behind the studio screen. Fortunately, George was in fact encouraging Ang to keep going, which he did.

Customer Review: Let there be rock
All the early AC/DC albums are great - High Voltage, Let there be rock, Powerage, Highway to Hell, are brilliant. After Bon Scott sadly departed, and Phil Rudd left the band, AC/DC changed. All the very basic raw energy of their early stuff left with them. My favourite tracks on Let there be Rock are: Bad boy boogie, Problem child, Hell ain’t a bad place to be. My favourite tracks off other early albums are: Rock and roll damnation, and High Voltage. The live album ‘If you want blood you got it’ is superb for a live album, and has all their early hits on it.

The Platinum Collection - Greatest Hits I, II & III

The Platinum Collection - Greatest Hits I, II & III
What once seemed Queen’s greatest liabilities–a preening flamboyance and pompous, overwrought theatricality–have ironically become their most enduring charms in a grey, postmodern pop-music landscape. While it eschews the glammy, pre-punk hard rock of live faves such as “Stone Cold Crazy” and “Tie Your Mother Down” for the band’s more quirky club-beat string of latter-day hits , this 51-track triple-CD anthology goes a long way toward documenting the true dimensions of the band’s music and fame. It even includes some solo work by Brian May and Freddie Mercury, whose duet on “Barcelona” with diva Montserrat Caball? transcends boundaries of both time and genre. A previously unreleased live performance of “The Show Must Go On” featuring Elton John on vocals is also included. –Jerry McCulley

Customer Review: The perfect greatest hits collection
This is a brilliant set of cds. Unlike many greatest hit collections this has every song you could want and was a great price. If you like Queen you have to buy this cd.

Customer Review: Great for Queen Newbies
If, like me, Queen were before your time, this is really for you. It has all the songs that you here in movies all the time (We will Rock You, You’re my Best Friend, etc) as well as loads you might possibly have never heard. Takes the fuss out of getting into Queen.

And of course, the music is absolutely fantastic.

Queen Rock Montreal (2CD)

Queen Rock Montreal (2CD)
Customer Review: Aggressive
This is an aggressive Queen live set with with first 10 or so songs played at breakneck speed. The DVD commentary offers explanations for this (the gigs were one-offs, and there was friction between the band and the filming crew). The fast and furious playing is great to hear from a band who are sometimes criticised for being too precise. The guitar playing and drums sound great, but are sometimes a little rushed as a result.

The singing however is amazing. Freddie’s voice seemed to get rougher from 1980 to 1986 (maybe as a result of smoking), but here it is perfect - clear and liquid, yet slightly frayed around the edges.

The highlights are “Let me entertain you” for it’s sheer pace and aggression, “Killer Queen” for the variations on the vocal, “Keep Yourself Alive” (which unlike all the other songs is played at something closer to the pace of the original recording), the best rendition of “Love of My Life” that I have heard, and the two tracks from “Flash” (which are missing from the DVD).

The reason for the 4 stars is that despite all the band’s efforts, there is so little interaction with the crowd.

Customer Review: Long overdue gem from their Royal Highnesses
You have to remember when listening to this fantastic album that there are only four guys on stage playing absolutely everything themselves here which just doesn’t happen these days. That would change from the next tour onwards with the introduction of a keyboard player to allow Freddie more time to run around the stage and interact with his audience. First off, the musicianship is outstanding on this release as is the sound quality. It really does sound like it was recorded yesterday - and what a novelty to have a full live version of Flash and The Hero! But what I have always loved about Queen’s visit to Montreal is the sheer power of Freddie Mercury’s voice. Too often live artists cop out on the high notes but not here - check out Somebody To Love to see what I mean. Fred really goes for it on these songs (which Brian and Roger even mention in the audio commentary of the DVD). Anyone who doesn’t ‘get’ Queen should buy this disc to see what all the fuss is about. Forget any preconceptions you might have about the band and really listen to this concert. Who else puts on a show like this? This is the last concert Queen played as a foursome, they were at their peak of worldwide popularity with recent number one hits in Britain and the USA and Hot Space had yet to rear its well intentioned though ultimately misguided head. Simply wonderful. Sure Milton Keynes was a terrific gig but you can tell they band are a little frazzled after two years of non stop touring and were ready for a break. So if you really want to see Queen on fire then look no further than Montreal.

A-Z: Kitty Daisy and Lewis: the Roots of Rock ‘n’ Roll

A-Z: Kitty Daisy and Lewis: the Roots of Rock ‘n’ Roll
Customer Review: Fantastic Music But…
I was really disappointed because I thought it was an album by Kitty, Daisy, Lewis (as it says on the front cover). It turns out that it is infact a compilation of different ‘roots/rock n roll’ artists, and only one of the songs on the whole album are from Kitty, Daisy, Lewis’ !! However quite apart from this fact, all the music on this 2 cd album is top notch roots/rock n roll music at its best, hence the 5*

Seems we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the Kitty, Daisy and Lewis album….
