Didnt know anything about this band until i got this. of course, i was aware of the gurvitz brothers from their solo work, baker gurvitz army, and of course, the gun. but somehow this all passed me by at the time for some reason. anyway, i checked it out and boy…this rocks! - the playing is excellent throughout, especially the guitarwork, and the majority of the songs here, i guess,a compilation from all their albums, are very strong. bit of a mystery why they didnt break through but they wouldnt be the first good band to be bypassed by the industry. The music? ok, heres the weird thing. this band , through the course of these two albums, manage to sound like almost every american based classic rock band from the mid to late 70’s you can think of. boston/kansas/bachman turner overdrive/journey/peter frampton etc - but the thing is - they pre-date them!(and theyre english!) if these tracks had come out in 1980 rather than 1971/72 youd think this lot were jumping on the bandwagon, but it seems they anticipated the sound 4 or 5 years before it arrived! other bands ,contempory to them, that they resemble, are the likes of cactus and the james gang. even e.l.o on some songs! All in all then , a very interesting mix. im just sorry it took me so long to discover them!

since reviewing this album ive been listening to it a lot and it just gets better and better. i would give it five stars if amazon would allow me to re-grade it. it has some truly great songs on here. there are songs herein that , if the likes of razorlight or snow patrol would release now, then they would have number one hits and the press would be gushing themselves (not that they, or any other pop band today, have the class to write songs like this) - what a waste. i cant believe this lot didnt break through. buy this anthology immediately!

Rock Follies

Rock Follies
Customer Review: I have loved this for years!
I found “Rock Follies” during a PBS fundraiser in the late ’70s, and sent a ridiculous contribution to the station (given my financial status at the time) to acquire the LP. I have just about worn it out since then, and have howled along to “On the Road” late into the night, a la Bridget Jones.

Customer Review: Excellent CD that puts PopStars in the shade
Forget the Monkees, forget PopStars, this was the definitive TV rock music series. The songs are outstanding, with the lyrics being an integral part of the storyline for the series.

Shake Rattle and Roll: 50 Classic Rock ‘n’ Roll Hits

Shake Rattle and Roll: 50 Classic Rock ‘n’ Roll Hits
Customer Review: Great tracklist, bad sound
Firstly, the version I recieved has a slightly different - and possibly superior - tracklisting from the one shown here. My copy replaces some British skiffle/pop with authentic American rock and roll - no Tornados’ ‘Telstar’ or Joe Brown’s ‘Picture Of You’ for example, but Fats Domino’s ‘Ain’t That A Shame’ and Frankie Lymon’s ‘Why Do Fools Fall In Love’ are included. The bulk of the content is identical however, and there’s no denying this is classic stuff. Unfortunately, the disc suffers from a chronic case of modern mastering - the dynamics are squashed to push the volume up, and the bass and treble are boosted. This means everything sounds a bit mushy and overbearing, while the vivid mid-range which gives rock and roll its energy is lost. It’s a heavy-handed approach that might work on dance music but is completely inappropriate for this material. Ah well. Probably a good disc for cruising to, but if you’re serious about this music, far better to investigate some of the properly mastered compilations from labels like Ace and Rhino.

Monsters of Rock

Monsters of Rock
Customer Review: Un-original
Agreeing with the above, this is a great selection of rock songs, and as soon as i saw this advertised i thought ‘iwant this!!!!’ but looking into it i do own all of these songs on various other compilations, its great if youre curious about rock music because these are the best youre going to find, but it is un-original and the same line up for many other cds, something for everyone on there though!

Customer Review: same old songs again
why do these record labels keep releasing these same old songs on the same old title ‘monsters of rock’?

don’t buy this cd because i bet you probably have all the songs on another best of heavy metal cd in a different order.

com’on record labels do something original.

but nice to hear gillan again.

Customer Review: Del’s best album
Recorded just before his death, this is Del Shannon at his creative best. Great songs, brilliantly produced and performed. If you like Del Shannon this, his last album, is unmissable. If you just like good music you will also really appreciate an excellent musical milestone. I have had this CD for over ten years and never tire of listening to it because it’s just so good.

Neil Young - Friends And Relatives Live From Red Rock Amphitheatre [2000]

Neil Young - Friends And Relatives Live From Red Rock Amphitheatre [2000]
Customer Review: simply the best
I feel that this is one of the great concerts of Neil Young’s long career and it’s superbly captured on DVD. Unlike other reviewers I like the CD and even have some affection for the new song Fool For Your Love. Neil and the band are relaxed and determined to enjoy themselves despite the atrocious weather. The set begins badly with the slight Motorcycle Mama but after that it’s pure joy all the way. You even get the previously unreleased and yet excellent Bad Fog of Loneliness. Buy this DVD and ENJOY!

Customer Review: Wet wet wet
Recorded at Red Rocks and, boy, did it rain! A good selection of acoustic and electric music in this video. It’s a pity they didn’t record the entire show and put it out on a double CD,I found the album average! It’s great to hear”Tonight’s the night” performed like the album version and there is some stunning slide guitar by Ben Keith.I also found “Words” better here than it is on “Harvest” and “Powderfinger is as good as usual!
The acoustic songs are all super and a nice surprise is “I believe in you” with Spooner Oldham playing piano. The other acoustic songs are “Unknown legend”,”Daddy went walking” and “Peace of mind”.It’s also good to hear “Walk on” from “On the beach” and a song that’s been kicking about for ages “Bad fog of loneliness”"Cowgirl in the sand”is probably the best song of the set,It’s great watching Jim Keltner,he’s such a brilliant drummer!
Yes,an excellent concert and with the weather being so bad,the class music shines through !

Best Prog Rock Album in the World… Ever! [BOX SET]

Best Prog Rock Album in the World… Ever! [BOX SET]
Customer Review: Why dosn’t this wow me….
On the surface this is a pretty good compilation of Prog rock tracks so why doesnt it wow me. Well its down to the tracks whilst there are many many gems here, but I already have them all (that is the ones that are good) there are no great surprises other than the final arrival of VDGG into the pantheon of great prog bands. In fact that is the biggest surprise that a “plague of Lighthouse keepers ” is featured at all. Having put one great prog classic on why did they shy away from some of the others the Yes track is good but “close to the edge ” would have been better. “Dancing with the moonlight knight” is excellent, but why not the massive “supper ready”. How come Matching Mole is represented by one of its weakest tracks ? For the money this is a decent collection of many memorable moments from Progs classic period but its not a wonderful collection. I imagine that a youngster who wanted a sampler would be put off of a number of acts because of the weak material that represents them here. It would also have been nice if it had contained even one rare or difficult to find gem but it doesn’t. If you want VDGG buy the remastered Pawn Hearts and you will have Theme one as well. Otherwise this CD is worth picking up if you like one or two of the tracks and want to check out some of the other groups included. Please don’t Judge Matching Mole on this one track although its loved by the MM fans it is untypical of that fine and understated group. As it is you can buy this three CD set for a low price right now used and that suggests that it doesnt satisfy a lot of folk. To summarize some good tracks but this is far from being the best prog compliation ever. Try Charisma Perspective (vinyl only ) and suck it and see (also vinyl only) for examples of great prog compilations.

Customer Review: Of Pomp and Circumstance
Growing up in England though the sixties and seventies for me was a great musical experience. We had the best of both world's, with the indigenous music scene generating bands like Pink Floyd, Family and Jethro Tull, not to mention such stalwarts as Brinsley Schwartz, Dr. Feelgood, Hawkwind, but we also had this great American music, mainly but not always from the Bay Area like the Dead, Airplane and Quicksilver but with H.P. Lovecraft, Moby Grape as well as the Fugs and the MC5 but without forgetting Frank Zappa.

As a disc jockey in the Locarno Ballroom in Sunderland I was able to draw on these bands and more, introducing some wonderful music from Germany as Faust and Cluster while my record collection grew almost daily.

The British Progressive movement encompassed many and more of the artists included in this three disc collection. It is hard to know where to draw the line really as so many influences were drawn upon to produce the unique recordings these bands made. While some may try to define the movement by the use of classical or modern jazz elements into the standard pop/rock form, there was much more to it than that. Complexity of composition or even the extension of songs beyond the formulaeic tin pan alley limit of three minutes would allow some to qualify. Surely we must accept that songs which sought to expand on the human condition beyond the predominant concern for teen love and angst of the top forty would qualify too.

This brief collection of songs was attractive to me even though I have most of the material on individual albums. But together they are a joy to play in the car or at parties. Back Street Luv by Curved Air with Sonja Kristina's unique vocals is a personal favourite and the populist minimalist rendition of a segment of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells is even a good contribution although I would have preferred Viv Stanshall's dulcid tones to that. Child in Time with Ian Gillan's chilling vocal leading a menacing Deep Purple pre-overture rocker does not seem out of place here. What I really like about this collection, aside from the songs and artists is the range of material on offer. You have Jethro Tull's 'Locomtive Breath' and Frank Zappa's 'Peaches on Regalia' from tha fantastic 'Hot Rats' album and there is a section of Peter Barden's Camel's 'Snow Goose' and Atomic Rooster's 'Tomorrow Night'. I had no sooner received this album than I heard from England that a band I had once introduced at the Locarno had reformed with the original members and was once again touring and appeared in the North East…Van der Graaf Generator. Shorty this review is for you.

All in all a great collection of songs and artists which took me back to pre-punk days where songwriting and virtuosity were valued and the musical world was opened up before us. There is a place for all sorts of music especially in the drab, monochrome hip-hop world we currently live in. I appreciate this piece of musical heritage and, although like many others I have a disagreement about which tracks and artists to include, I think that this collection gives a good taste of the material that is out there for further investigation. Highly recommended.

PS. One of my own personal joys was identifying how many of these artists had appeared at one of the Sunderland venues. It was easier to count which had not.

Enjoy
