Rock of Ages: the Band in Concert

Rock of Ages: the Band in Concert
Rock of Ages is a gift from the group long celebrated as one of rock’s best concert attractions… and on New Year’s Eve 1971 the Band were at the top of their game. Their show that night was hailed as one of the greatest-ever live sets–and a hint of that magic came through on 1972’s truncated Rock Of Ages. Now radically expanded, the new double CD only enhances the original’s reputation. Praise from Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Eric Clapton has established the Band as musicians’ musicians–and their instrumental dexterity, musical fluency and lyrical intrigue are to the fore here, notably on “Stage Fright” and “The Weight”. There is also the bonus of an entire disc of previously unreleased tracks–including a blistering cover of “Loving You is Sweeter than Ever”. But the real gold is mined on the four tracks featuring special guest Bob Dylan, then in the midst of his mysterious withdrawal. Rock of Ages was always great. This restoration makes it greater still. –Patrick Humphries

Customer Review: Live Albums 101 - This is how to do it.
Right folks, if you’re starting a band this is how to play a concert. Before you assemble in the hall, get a CD player and put this album on. Listen and listen good. Right, now see if you are up to the task… The Band always were; this album displays them in their finest form.

Great singing, great playing and - most importantly, and unforgettably - great songs.

Pure quality. The greatest live album ever.

Customer Review: Superb
This is one of THE great Rock N Roll bands captured live on New Years Eve 1971/72. With tracks from “Music from the Big pink” and “The Band” as well as “Stage Fright” this has most of The Bands best material on it. To add a bit of spice the The Band are supported by a top notch horn section (all Jazz and session men) who are arranged by Allen Toussaint the noted New Orleans producer/singer/pianist.

Its all superb, but my favourite non-Band track is “(I Don’t Want To) Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes”. This is superb super-charged straight ahead Rock N Roll. Of their original material Rick Danko’s tremendous reading of “Unfaithful Servant” with that subtle but devastating guitar solo by Robbie Robertson takes some beating. The extra tracks, which were never on the original CD release are just as good if not better. These include four tracks with Bob Dylan, including “Like a Rolling Stone”. This is without doubt up there with the best live albums ever recorded and should be in everybodies collection.

The Heart of Rock ‘n’ Roll: the Best of Huey Lewis and the News

The Heart of Rock ‘n’ Roll: the Best of Huey Lewis and the News
Customer Review: Brilliant!
Ahh, how refreshing to hear some classic style American Rock music. I loved this album. It is packed full of great tracks, so much so I don’t really have a favourite, although Power of love and Hip to be Square do stand out. After putting up with the never ending pop rubbish conveyer-belt it was like a breath of fresh air to hear something original like this. I am not by the way a middle aged guy who liked this music when he was a teenager, I am 19 and a student. I just wish there were a few more Huey’s around today so we could balance things up a bit with the Pop world.

Customer Review: Much more than just the ‘Power Of Love’
Once again a band who have been associated with one song and not given the recognition they deserve for the rest of their work. ‘Power Of Love’ is a classic 80’s track but songs like ‘If This Is It’, ‘Do You Believe In Love’ & ‘Perfect World’ are also superb songs. If you like your 80’s music then this album is a must buy and even if your just a fan of the film ‘Back To The Future’ check this baby out! You will not be disappointed.

Customer Review: A Great New Talent.
I discovered this album quite by chance and what a stunning find it has turned out to be. I hesitate at the use the phrase ‘album of the year’ but I think it is the strongest and most original album by a female artist in 2007.

The music on this album is certainly very different to the standard singer-songwriter fare. The pieces are quite long(eight songs on a fifty minute album, the shortest is five minutes long)and intricate musically and lyrically. The songs are very rich in imagery and gorgeously melodic.

Despite their length the songs never drag, holding the attention throughout and allowing you to drift off into the places conjured by her words.

The guitar playing has an easy fluidity that brings to mind Nick Drake. However the artist she reminds me of the most is Joanna Newsom and the comparisons are unavoidable(no harp though)but where as “Ys” has a certain fantastical air to it this album is rooted in nature and has a rather earthy solidity. The music centers on the rhythm of the guitar and her beautiful voice and is supported by a variety of acoustic instruments.

This is a fantastic album by a major new artist. Get it NOW!

SAHB Stories / Rock Drill

SAHB Stories / Rock Drill
Customer Review: Rock Drill - The Overlooked Classic
“Rock Drill” is the best SAHB album and its devalued reputation should be disregarded. Although there’s some weaker tracks here, the title track, “Dolphins” and “Rock And Roll” are brilliant. Harvey’s lyrics here are a whole cut above his previous comic book style. Other criticisms that “Rock Drill” is too keyboard heavy (repeated in the booklet notes)are unfounded. This finds Zal and co at their hard rocking best. Worth investigating…

Customer Review: Two for the History books
I first listen to this music as a fifteen year old. It was a revelation just as Alex wanted it to be. Now there is tommorow. A subject dear to Alex’s heart. In the 20th year since the sudden death of Alex Harvey from a cardiac arrest at Zeebrugge in Belgium, (it was a Friday, appropriately cold and wet in his native Glasgow, announced on late night radio in my student bed sit)Mercury has put out these exceptionally well timed compilations. This represents the last classic, SAHB stories, and a powerful hybrid Rock Drill where Hugh McKenna still provided writing credits yet was replaced by the journeyman keyboards player Tommy Eyre in person. The latter album mysteriously lost a track much awaited by the fans of the band called No Complaints Department. Said at the time to be one of the strongest tracks they had ever recorded (who knows!) it was pulled at the last minute in favour of a shoddy substitute Mrs Blackhouse (the original LP sleeves had a sticker to cover it as an original track). NCD did turn up on a recent (5 years) german compilation but has again been deleted. Mercury could have used this opportunity to pull out this lost gem but I guess it is now gone forever. Harvey, Cleminson, Glenn and the two McKenna’s well, they will live on here with their other output well into the future. Enjoy masterful music from five men at their peak.

AS he queried at so many performances, Alex we did indeed love you and continue to remember you with fondness even if the concept of a 67 year old Alex Harvey never did quite make sense. He would have been quite some old age pensioner! Best to hear him as here with a middle aged fire second to none and backed by some of the finest musicians the city of Greater Glasgow ever produced. One for any collector of significant rock music.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal: Remastered

Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal: Remastered
Customer Review: Slighty better than Frampton comes alive!!!
The greatest live album ever bar none. Velvet’s snobs hate it because of the “rock outs” and the the extended guitar play of Wagner and Hunter. Look I love the Velvets with Nico and all the early stuff but the this is equally sublime. The band is tighter than a shark with lock jaw and Reed’s singing is fantastic. No whooping or howling out of place either. Clearly an audience who love the material and add to the occasion. I dare anyone not to marvel at the brilliance of Sweet Jane as Hunter and Wagner do a jazzy intro to be joined half way through by Lou Reed walking on stage to the crunchiest riff of all time and the audience losing the plot. Heroin is stunning and builds to such a crescendo you feel exhausted at the end of it. The best ever version of Rock n Roll is also included for good measure. All in all Reed doing what Reed does best, surprising the audience and moving the goalposts. Who has ever followed this up? Possibly Television which is the best compliment anyone can pay.

Customer Review: Doesn’t Represent Lou’s Core Values
The main problem i find with ‘Rock n Roll Animal’ is it really fails to represent Lou Reed as an artist. The overblown arena rock style of the album is a thousand miles away from Lou’s core musical values although the band do play incredibly well (if you appreciate that style of music).

I prefer the songs in their original form as they were more subtle in arrangement which gave each song its own distinct sound.

There is really nothing like that on ‘Rock n Roll Animal’ as each song just seems to be an excuse to indulge in a welter of heavy guitars.

Lou had certainly changed his style again. My problem is though whereas in most instances Lou is the man who instigates his own musical endeavours this time round he tends to be the side show and the highlight is the twin guitars potency.

Lou definitely takes a back seat this time round.

Roots Rock Riot

Roots Rock Riot
Customer Review: Everything will be allright
The long awaited second album by Skindred is finally here. I was worried that after touring, with Babylon for over three years, the Dred boys would be able to pull off another classic. The fact that Jeff Rose and Ginge left not long after the Babylon was released; record company politics;could have meant a dramatic problem re song writing. The last time I saw them live they did little new material to give us an idea of what the new material was like.

Having said all that, the melting pot of metal, punk and Jamaican danchall is all here. Benji gives us his lilting one second, harsh Ragga/ metal vocals the next. The guitars bass and drums interspersed with the trusty sampler gives us a wonderfully fresh groove.Changing tempos and mood dynamics flow effortlessly.

The song are all extremly catchy while having an inherent power that makes them all the more infectious. The mix of dance and metal/rock is gauranteed to have you jumping about even if your on a bus listening to i-pod!

The Title track Roots rock is a belter followed by Trouble which will hook you in with it’s sing along chorus. Ratrace, allright, are all good songs , in fact I don’t think there is one bad song on this album. The more I listen to it the more I get in to it. The doubts that I had wtih song writing over the line up change have been completely dispelled. This fusion of styles is contemporary, exciting and I can’t think of a “rock ” band at the moment that come close. Horns are on Rude boy for life as well as live strings. The production is clear without losing any of the power. I can’t wait to see them live, though they look like they are touring in the U.S. till the end of the year, hopfully next year.

Customer Review: 10 seconds left for you to decide…
whether or not to buy this..?

In general the album is heavier than Babylon, with more lean towards jungle (cause ah riot), and for anyone who doesn’t know Skindred, but is a fan of metal, this album is well worth a try.

Skindred fans, this is also good, as the band have resisted the temptation to commercialise, as many bands do, and have indeed ‘uncommercialised’.
