Firehouse Rock

Firehouse Rock
Customer Review: Timeless classic
Timeless classic from the golden age of reggae, ahead of Wild Suspense in my humble opinion as the Wailing Souls’ greatest record. Title track and ‘Kingdom Rise, Kingdom Fall’ the highlights, but not a duff moment amid the wonderful harmonies and body-wiggling rhythms.

Customer Review: An all time CLASSIC by the Wailing Souls.
This album is in my top ten list of reggae albums I have heard.Originally released in 1981 (the year I was born), it is great to see it reissued by Greensleeves. I have bought alot of their reissues so far but this is my favourite. The harmonies are amazing, so it’s no surprise to hear that they learnt alot from people like the Wailers and Joe Higgs. In fact they can be heard singing backing vocals on the original version of Trenchtown Rock by the Wailers. But luckily the music is fantastic too.Played by possibly the best session musicians from Jamaica during the 80’s, the Roots Radics.Excellent production by another important figure of 80’s reggae, the great Henry “junjo” Lawes.Mixed at King Tubby’s by the Scientist, you can hear on his album Scientist rids the world of the curse of the evil vampires, that he took alot of the music from this to form the dub foundation for that excellent album, so I recommend that too.In fact it’s almost like a companion album.

This album contains the classics Firehouse Rock,Run Dem Down,Oh What A Feeling,Kingdom Rise Kingdom Fall and Act of Affection. These tracks are my favourites but the others by no means let them down.I recommend this to anyone who wants an accessible introduction to reggae and to anyone who is looking to expand on their current collection.

I would also check out other reissues by the Greensleeves label such as Keith Hudson-Rasta Communication,Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus-Rastafari,Scientist-Rids The World…,Dr Alimantado-Best Dressed Chicken In Town etc.And if your looking for more by the Wailing Souls try Wild Suspense.

Bill Bruford - Rock Goes To College [1979]

Bill Bruford - Rock Goes To College [1979]
Customer Review: released at last
Hats off to Bill Bruford for getting this licenced from the BBC archives and released. I have had to make do with a 3rd generation pirate copy from vhs which is pretty poor quality. This in comparison is very good indeed. Presenter Pete Drummond has been edited out along with the student antics of shoving a custard pie in his face. The music clips haven’t been touched but must have been remastered. Like the previous reviewer Paul B there are some annoyances especially regarding shots of Sir Allan Holdsworth’s stunning guitar work. I was a great fan of this Bruford incarnation and a lot the music still holds up after all these years. Also check out the phenomenal Bass work of Jeff Berlin who also appeared on Sir Allans ill fated roadgmes album for warners. Great performances by all the band, but a must for all Holdsworth fans. Highlight are the tracks 5G and adios a la pasada with annette peacock.

Customer Review: Bruford & Co on brilliant form
Fantastic to see this released. Pity it wasn’t longer - sound and picture quality good. All the band are on great form - brilliant musicianship all round as you would expect. Camera work is frustrating at times for Holdsworth fans (like me) - the camera insists at times on focusing on the body of Holdworths guitar with just his picking hand on show, sometimes no shots during solo’s, having said that plenty of Holdsworth’s incredible technique and truly innovate playing - hat’s off to the other guys too, especially Jeff Berlin on bass. By the time I got to see Bruford, Holdsworth had left, replaced by John Clarke, so it’s great to have this record of one of the shows with Holdsworth on-board. I’m afraid I wince at Annette Peacock’s vocals but that’s maybe just me - still gave it 5 stars. Overall very hightly recommended - an awsome band at the height of their powers.

Driving Rock Ballads

Driving Rock Ballads
Customer Review: The essential driving CD
When driving it doesn’t matter how cheesy or par ce a song is just as long as you can sing along to it and crank up the volume. With this box box set you get a mix of the loud, the power ballads and the downright dodgy all in one.

Some of the more delightful of offerings come from Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac and Chris Rea(Who has the driving anthems market covered in my view) Spun over three discs there are ample tunes to get you pipes around here. T’Pau, Phil Collins and The Cars, with their awesome “Drive” are there to give you your dosage of power ballads.

This CD will obviously appeal massively to dad’s and would be a perfect fathers day present or birthday present but unfortunately I must confess that I love this box set too and i’m still a teenager. To be honest it would be a classic collection to have for the whole family to endure in the car and pass Mike And The Mechanics on to the next generation of helpless kids who will end up being closet fans all their lives.

Enjoy!

Rockin’ The Joint: Live at the Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas

Rockin’ The Joint: Live at the Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas
Customer Review: “LAZY”
Well having been an avid Aerosmith fan for years I was delighted that a new live album was being realeased, what did we get instead? A lazy, over produced mish mash of old and new songs that none of which stand out as being “exciting or emotional”. How can an Aerosmith Live Album open with “Beyond Beautiful” is way “beyond” me when you consider that this particular track was one of the weaker creations from that very “mediocre” album “Just Push Play”. From then on in this so called “live” event just goes down hill. Steven Tyler delivers as usual but even his colourful language is bleeped out!! This whole affair is totally lacking in colour……….but at least it sold a few hundred copies and keeps the band in a never ending supply of fat cigars. AVOID at all costs if you are a devout Aerohead!

Customer Review: Once again, another live Aerosmith CD…
They seem to make a living out of releasing live versions of their songs, but once again, to the Aerosmith fan, this CD is indispensible.

Obviously taking place in Las Vegas, this live show features songs that are not very well known to the casual music fan. Sure, they sing Walk This Way and I Don't Want To Miss A Thing (both versions one of the better tracks on the album), but the rest of the CD is older, less recognisable songs. If you are a newcomer to Aerosmith, then this CD is probably not the best place to start.

For fans, its great to hear the band play songs they don't usually perform live. Rattlesnake Shake is the stand out on the album, and Joe Perry's instantaneous, improvised solos are a joy to behold.

The album is slightly short, I bet they performed more than 11 songs at the actual show, and the first song is just a Good Evening introduction, not a proper song, but even so, I didn't feel short changed listening to the album. It was a fun, exciting show, and filled with all the Steve Tyler trademarks.

The Dark Side (The Goth Rock Album)

The Dark Side (The Goth Rock Album)
Customer Review: Goth-Curious? This is a great starting point.
This double album is packed with a rich diversity of alternative rock music. It’s a superb introduction to ‘Gothic Rock’ that rewards repeated playing.

I’m not too sure about the exact definitions, but it encompasses a wide range of styles. These include hard, gothic, industrial, and corporate rock, AOR, electronica and even some folk-inspired songs. The common thread is that the songs all have an edgy beauty, whether in the music, instrumentation, or lyrics. Without wishing to sound too arty, the songs explore (and in some cases appear to celebrate) the sinister, nefarious or unfulfilled side of human existence - hence the title.

I just love this album. The more I’ve listened to it the more I’ve liked it. It rewards repeated playing - especially if you are new to this sort of music. Persevere with it and I feel you will be amply rewarded. I would have rated this 3 stars when I first bought it, 4 stars within a fortnight and now I have no hesitation in giving it full marks - it’s 90+% killer with little or no filler.

The compilation features some of the biggest tunes by the best exponents in this area. It has introduced me to many new artists, as well as showing familiar ones in a different light and brought together some gems that I was already aware of. I will certainly be buying more albums by the featured artists on the strength of this set.

Another plus with this album is its balance: it contrasts heavy and light musical styles, and whilst the overall tone is black, the editor has injected levity by including two or three real oddities. These may make you laugh aloud on first listen and smile thereafter. You may also find yourself dancing or singing along to quite a few of the tracks - never a bad sign (unless you’re in the convent trying to maintain that vow of silence - don’t let Mother Superior catch you with these two discs though!).

Hats off to the editor who chose the selections on this compilation. I am a DJ and have a considerable music collection, but when I fancy a late night listen or have a longish journey to make, this is the CD I often reach for.

Customer Review: Rubbish Compilation
Although there are a couple of good songs (by the Cure and the Cult), this CD is entirely rubbish. Don’t waste your money.

Customer Review: Del’s best album
Recorded just before his death, this is Del Shannon at his creative best. Great songs, brilliantly produced and performed. If you like Del Shannon this, his last album, is unmissable. If you just like good music you will also really appreciate an excellent musical milestone. I have had this CD for over ten years and never tire of listening to it because it’s just so good.
