Gothic Rock: the Ultimate Collection

But what a great compilation, and as its cheap as chips I’d say buy it to any one !
Customer Review: Treasure!
Very dubious about this, when I ordered it. I expected a box full of compilation albums. which it is but. a couple of the CD’s feature tracks that very high in the Indie charts recomendation itself. one cd is from the 80’s another focusses on the 90’s. Only 1 cd I consider a compilation from anywhere. I bought this to discover new bands having a bit of a goth revival and theres really some great stuff in here, Theatre of Hate and Danielle DAx are two bands I shall be seeking out more of. Bauhaus too, come close to buying one of their albums many times, based on their contributions to this compilation I think I might.
Recommended if you want to get out more in the world of Goth.

Queen Rocks

Queen Rocks
A compilation–intended, perhaps, to prove that, for all the effete connotations of their name and reputation, this band actually could cut loose when it suited them. But was there ever any doubt? Sceptics should bear in mind that, as well as Dame Freddie, Queen also contained Brian May and Roger Taylor: the former a singularly ambitious lead guitarist, the latter an utterly unreconstructed rocker. And their musical input–together with the calm demeanour of bassist John Deacon–was enough to anchor the occasionally fey leanings of their lead singer. With only a few exceptions, the tracks here fall into one of two categories: either riff-driven slabs of boogie (”Tie Your Mother Down”, the proto-speed-metal of “Sheer Heart Attack”), or epic rockers (”Now I’m Here”, “Seven Seas Of Rhye”, the magnificent “It’s Late”). “I Want It All” today sounds more like a manifesto than ever, while claims of their decline are silenced by the inclusion of some later classics–”One Vision” and “Hammer To Fall” (from The Works). It wasn’t all moustaches and frilly tutus, you know. –Andrew McGuire
Customer Review: Not just their “Greatest Hits” recycled!
A great rock album demonstrating Queen at their best. If you’re still discovering the music of Queen, buy Hits I, II & III first, then maybe “Innuendo”, “The Works” or “A Kind of Magic” then try this as an intro to some of their rockier, heavier material.
If you like the sound of “Tie Your Mother Down”, “Keep Yourself Alive” or “Stone Cold Crazy” then you’re ready to start discovering the early albums, so get a copy of “A Day at the Races” whilst if “Tear it Up”, “Put Out the Fire” or “I Can’t Live With You” is more your taste then check out their later stuff including “Innuendo” or perhaps “The Game”.
A great selection, despite it borrowing heavy from some of the “Hits” collections!
Customer Review: Review of “Queen Rocks”
If you are an ardent Queen fan you have probably have most of these tracks on other albums. It is still an excellent album in it’s own right however. The album’s final track “No-one but you” is a touching ballad which breaks up the overall tempo of the album. Some of the old favourites are there along with a few of the less well known tracks certified as classics by the Queen fans. A perefct introduction to Queen music and if you’ve never heard “Tear it up”, that’s worth the money alone. Rock music at it’s best.

Sampled Vol.4: 40 Original Soul Jazz Funk Rock & Disco Tracks

Sampled Vol.4: 40 Original Soul Jazz Funk Rock & Disco Tracks
The concept of the Sampled series is simple. Virgin have chosen a selection of contemporary dance and hip-hop hits, traced the samples used in them and presented them all in their original glory on a double CD. It’s an easy process but like many simple ideas, it works. The first three in the series have offered some real gems, and this latest is also full of rarities, classics and curious oddities too. There are a few obvious tunes too, but if you want to hear the tracks behind the Happy Mondays’ “Step On” (John Kongos’ “He’s Gonna Step On You”), Ice T’s “You Played Yourself” (James Brown’s “The Boss”), Royksopp’s “So Easy” (Gals and Pals “Blue On Blue”) Layo and Bushwacka’s “Love Story” (Nina Simone’s “Rags and Old Iron”) or DJ Shadow’s “Dark Days” (David McCallum’s “House Of Mirrors”), this is the album for you. –Paul Sullivan
Customer Review: This series is now getting a bit ‘thin’
Sampled Vols 1,2, & 3 are excellent, however this does come across as a bit of a barrel scraper.
Customer Review: Sampled do it again…
Another cracking collection in the Sampled series, if you have enjoyed any of the other three compilations in this collection you will NOT be disapointed – quality tracks with a few real gems.

This Old Heart Of Mine & Soul On The Rocks

This Old Heart Of Mine & Soul On The Rocks
Customer Review: Astonishing!!
I heard neither of these LPs first time round, and so I only knew the Isleys from their more famous hits, which, frankly, had always irritated me. Many years later, we are all starting to grasp that every Motown song (no matter who sings) is really the ‘work’of the Funk Brothers. A number of tracks on these LPs are a classic example of this. They sound breathtakingly modern, but with the added twist that they are better than modern. They are better because - being expert jazz musicians - the Funk Brothers were better than probably any modern rock or pop session musician. The first track sets everything off on the right course. It’s a complete rework of some of the more popular renditions of the song and is distinguished by the mindboggling energy of the basswork (presumably Mr. Jamerson). The second track to look out for is 12 (’Seek and you shall find’). The precision (of the guitar chops and snare) and ‘build’ of the track blows you away. There is also a gaggle of songs (20 to 23 inclusive) which have a modernity that it is hard to believe. What is also stunning about this material is how the Isleys come across as having a rawness and power (in the James Brown Mould) that outdoes even exponents such as Junior Walker (although we must never forget that the foundation for all these songs is really Earl, James, Joe, Bob and the rest). Extraordinary! Buy one! Buy one for your music-loving friends!
Customer Review: The Greatest Motown/Soul Album …..Ever!
A classic Motown compilation. The Isley Brothers must be one of the most underated Motown/Soul bands. They weren’t home-grown Motown artists, but they joined when Motown was at it’s best. They embraced the music turned out by the hugely talented songwriting trio - Holland/Dozier/Holland and produced some of the best versions of their work. If you’re into Tamla Motown, Soul or R&B, then this CD will quickly become one of your favourites.

California Dreaming: the Cream of La’s Seventies Rock

California Dreaming: the Cream of La’s Seventies Rock
Customer Review: Just great California music
If you remember the Califormia Seventies as a blur of fantastic music, but you don’t seem to have any on your system, or your LP’s are unplayable, like mine - buy this! I don’t know why it’s a fantastic mix - even those I hadn’t heard before - but it just is.
Customer Review: Highway 1 - Revisited
Concur fully with the previous review by Country Grumpkin (what a wonderful pseudonym) that this excellent compilation represents perfect accompaniment for a long drive. Where better for that than Highway 1, which runs down the West Coast of California from the North in San Francisco, through Monterey and Carmel, past Big Sur and Saint Simeon on South towards Laurel Canyon and L.A.
What particularly appeals about this offering, is the attention paid by the compiler to linking the sequence of tracks by some kind of association to what precedes and that which follows. For example, we have Buffalo Springfield followed by Stephen Stills and then Crazy Horse. Later, there is Jackson Browne followed by The Eagles, The Flying Burrito Brothers by Gram Parsons and finally Canned Heat by The Grateful Dead, both of whom appeared at The Woodstock Festival. Consequently, this set has very good continuity, it really flows from one track to the next like a gently flowing tide. I would like to endorse the inclusion of the following tracks, not mentioned in the previous review: Love`s - Alone again or (From the majestic “Forever changes” Album), Joni Mitchell`s - Blue (From the Album of the same title) Fleetwood Mac`s - Don`t stop ( From their platinum disc “Rumours”) and last but not least two singles Jo Jo Gunne`s fine “Run, Run ,Run” and America`s beautiful “Horse with no name”.
However, perhaps the biggest surprise is the exclusion of the Title Song itself “California Dreaming”, since in essence that song would carry this collection forward from The Long Hot Summer thru The Fall and into Winter, when the song was composed by John Phillips in New York City. Thus making this a good all year round choice, especially when driving. Have a good trip.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Legends
Customer Review: Great Cover Interesting Selection
This is a nice package I assume comes from my grandmother’s home the UK, known for their nice Connie packaging and this is no exception. The cover is wonderful. CONNIE IS A ROCK N ROLL LEGEND, the first female to break into the male dominated field and on HER TERMS. This collections contains her top hits (and she had plenty of them) and a few UK hits that never made it to my homeland (USA) except on SOUVENIRS. I’LL GET BY and BABY ROO. Two of her her fine UK songs (not considered rock) would be a nice addition IT WOULD BE WORTH IT and the wonderful MY CHILD.
A fine collection from the world’s first female international singing superstar.
